I wonder if someone here could possibly explain something to me. I have wondered about this for some time:

If Criterion has in the past, and continues to release certain Public Domain titles such as Carnival of Souls and My Man Godfrey, why haven't we seen Criterion editions of bona fide classics that are PD such as His Girl Friday, Meet John Doe, and ESPECIALLY Night of the Living Dead??? I mean, there's no excuse that it is 2016 and there is still no North American blu-ray of that movie. Right? (EDIT: Okay, no REPUTABLE North American release)

Wouldn't Criterion be an ideal company to release it? Or barring that, why doesn't Shout Factory do it? Or Arrow? Please explain what I'm missing here...

I believe a lot would depend on quality of prints available. Regrettably, I imagine PD prints have not been the most cared for historically given their low economic value due to the lack of copyright protection.

Romero and Martin Scorsese are working on a restoration of the film that has nine minutes of lost footage.

A trailer for a new 4K restoration—not Criterion—of Howard's End just popped up on Apple Trailers. It's from Cohen Media. The HD trailer played from Apple TV looks good. But I'm still happy with my Criterion copy, for the moment.

Yeah, Criterion still has to license the transfer or obtain a good print. Another title that's technically in the public domain is Charade. The cheap DVDs sourced from PD prints were always crap.

Also, I think His Girl Friday is in the works.

Does Shout do any restoration work?

Solaris was amazing on the big screen, and weirdly it didn't drag out or seem that long compared to when watching on bluray! Such a powerful film, I should read the book, might watch the newer version tonight..

I am really excited! Took a leap on four Criterions I haven't seen before:
-Diabolique
-The New World
-Ikiru
-Bicycle Thief

I spent way too long thinking out what to buy, but I am fairly confident I chose well. We shall see.

And I also picked up Dr. Strangelove

I've got a question: Does anyone know why Barry Lyndon (to my knowledge) has never been graced with any special features on its home media releases, other than a theatrical trailer??

Also, was it just that one New Year's Illustration that is the reason for us believing it is to be getting a Criterion release soon? Are there any other sources? My fingers are crossed, it's my favourite Kubrick film, and I hope it comes in a package as deluxe as Dr. Strangelove did!

What's in New year's drawing that suggested Barry Lyndon?

Is this definitely confirmed as accurate and true? I saw a lot of debate about it on-line, whether it was a joke or a rumor or a lie or a misinterpretation, and could never find any first- or even second-hand sources to say one way or another. I'd love to believe it. The fact that Devin Faraci is posting it based solely on a rumor (uncredited) from another site, rather than posting any confirmation from his sources -- which seem to run quite deep -- doesn't help it pass the sniff test. (He also badly misexplains the copyright issue that affects the film.)

Yea, special features would be cool. But more importantly, what is this about a Criterion release?!?

Arrow has announced a Dekalog box set with extra goodies...

Quote:
4K restoration of all ten episodes, presented in their original broadcast aspect ratios
Original Polish mono soundtrack (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-rays), with optional English subtitles
Pedestrian Subway (1973, 29 mins), Kieślowski’s professional fiction debut, about a man trying to repair a failed marriage
First Love (1974, 52 mins), a docudrama about a teenage couple coping with an unwanted pregnancy
Personnel (1975, 67 mins), Kieślowski’s first feature-length fiction film, a partly autobiographical piece about a Warsaw theatre company
The Calm (1976, 82 mins), one of Kieślowski’s most powerful early films, about a man rebuilding his life in mid-70s Poland after a short prison sentence
Short Working Day (1981, 73 mins), Kieślowski’s study of a political strike, controversially told from the viewpoint of a Communist functionary trying to keep order
Krzysztof Kieślowski: Still Alive (2007), an affectionate 82-minute portrait of the director by his former student Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz, including interviews with dozens of friends and colleagues
Collector’s booklet featuring a lengthy essay on Dekalog and Kieślowski by Father Marek Lis, plus Kieślowski’s own intensely self-critical discussion of all the films in this set and Stanley Kubrick’s famous eulogy to Kieślowski and co-writer Krzysztof Piesiewicz

Cancelled my order and re-placed it using the 25% off BNSPARKLEr coupon. It worked! Thats 62.5% off retain price and certainly the best deal I've gotten from B&N.

It wouldn't accept the coupon while I was logged into my account but if I signed out -> used the coupon -> signed back in, it worked perfectly.

No one in this thread ever mentioned Barry Lyndon in relation to that drawing, so don't let this guy get you all worked up over nothing!

CriterionCast suggested it as a possibility from one of the New Years clues. It's a huge reach, though.
