I'm really excited about Muriel, Or the Time of Return coming tomorrow. I've never seen it, and it gives me an excellent double feature plan for tomorrow night, along with Last Year at Marienbad re-watch, of course.

Hell, might as well make it a triple feature with Hiroshima mon amour.

More Resnais is always a good thing.

It's funny, because although I was clearly aware of Resnais and some of his work, it's really in the past two-three years that I've seen more and more of his films. Godard will always be my favorite New Wave director. That will never change. Ever. But Resnais has taken over second in solid fashion.

Now I just need to get Night and Fog. I've resisted for a while now. I saw it years ago in a film class and it's just ... a lot to take. But it's something I absolutely need to own, whether I watch it more than once or not. It's important.

I watched about 45 minutes of The Thin Red Line this morning before I fell asleep. Outstanding picture quality!

It appears that the Stanley Kubrick Archives will be re-released this October. Check out that price!

I mostly hated LYaM because I couldn't keep track of who was who, because everyone looked the same to me. That and it seemed overly pretentious.

Are the others done in a similar style or would they be a safe-ish blind buy?
Muriel is less accessible than Marienbad, imo. Hiroshima is easy to follow but some do not care for its mood. Night and Fog is very easy to follow but very difficult to watch at times. Still something everyone should see at least once.

I believe that is some kind of re-release but still very good price, as I remember the original had to be the usual bigger size around 17 x 12, like the Chaplin, Bergman and Almodovar ones, which costs quite a bit more.

No, believe me I've been there.

It's just tough to figure out whether someone is being sarcastic or what. I'm sorry if I implied something negative. I just honestly didn't know.

I think pages of TV discussion unrelated to Criterion, while entertaining and interesting to read, is beginning to outlast its welcome. There are TV threads in the forums, and some of these topics and opinions would be great to read there.

Thanks for understanding.

I've had varied experiences with certain films and staying awake for. Years ago, I'd watched 'The New World' but didn't finish because I was tired. It was beautiful and I thought I'd get back to it. Well couple years later, I rented 'Tree of Life' on blu ray. It was around 11 pm on a Friday night and I was just as tired as I was when I first try to watch 'New World' so I went ahead and started watching 'Tree of Life' figuring I'll fall asleep to the beautiful images. Low and behold, I was captivated and mesmerized and had one of the best cinema experiences. I didn't drift for one moment. It held my attention the whole time.
[Show spoiler]Afterwards, I thought about the movie and realized, wow, if someone was to ask what I want to see in a film and I started listing it, it would have to be films from different genre to fulfill the list-I want an emotional connection without a lot of talking, breathtaking scenery, dinosaurs, outer space stuff, a love story, lots of pictures less talking-and that's what I got in one film.

Now, I've turned it into a challenge of sort. Certain very tired nights/days, I'll put in a film and see if I can stay awake all the way thru. Last film that I did that with recently was 'Here is Your Life' by Jan Troell. What an awesome movie! The ending was just so perfect. It resonated even after the credits ended. Loved it and so I had to look up more Jan Troell and purchased 'The Emigrants/The New Land" during this Barnes and Noble 50% off sale. Now I have three movies to look forward to, the other one being 'Everlasting Moments'.

For fellow Cronenberg fans, Shout Factory has announced releases of both Rabid and Dead Ringers.

I was wondering if anybody was going to mention 12 Monkeys. Orphan Black and Mr. Robot are the other current SF series I'm pretty happy with too. (Game Of Thrones I'm just following along with the blu-rays, though I'm a season behind.)

Wow the bang for the buck there is amazing, locking in my pre-order now. Because of the dimensions change, the book is a whopping 864 pages vs 544 from the previous format.

Yeah, 864 pages, hardcover, less than $14. That's insane. I put in my pre-order hours ago. No way I'm going to miss out on that.

So it would seem if you have the original big book then "nothing to see here, move along"?

What's a good price point on Last Year at Marienbad on Criterion blu? I know that StudioCanal has issued a region B-locked release, but Pro B noted a few minor issues with that were not cleaned up; those same issues were cleaned up on the Criterion. I'd like to start looking around as I begin to familiarize myself more with Resnais' work. I have Hiroshima, Mon Amour, and a few of his other films/docs are on Hulu. Marienbad really intrigues me. I loved Delphine Seyrig in Jeanne Dielman, and would be interested to see her in a role that was a bit more dynamic.

I should be ready to start looking within a few weeks. There are a couple other films I want first, but it's definitely on my immediate want list.

Also, I'm curious as to the group's impressions of Je t'aime, Je t'aime.

Thanks!

Delphine Seyrig is in "Muriel," which was released last Tuesday. It's the first time the movie has had a watchable us release. It's a mystery, like Marienbad, but much more solvable.

The Studio Canal release of Marienbad plays in region A equipment. The review States something like, "The release has PAL content before the main menu." So I just tried it in my region A equipment that does not do PAL and it got to the main menu. I think the review's statement may be missing a "no" before "PAL."

The SC release has an intro. by Ginette Vincendeau which is worth hearing.

Horrors! I actually sold the Criterion release and replaced it with the SC. I wasn't disappointed.

edit: I checked the extras, which include two Resnais short films: (no Night & Fog) one about the National Library and his Ode to Plastic (not the actual title -- don't remember) and they all play on Region A equipment that does not play PAL.

I paid about $70 for Marienbad, and that was a good deal. I was simply tired of waiting for it to come back into print.

I mean, I'm not going to pay that much for many films, obviously. But for this one, it seemed reasonable. Especially when you look at some of the prices being asked on eBay and such. I think I saw a new copy of the Criterion Blu-ray going for something like $280. I mean, it's absurd.

Wow. Just received both The New World and Muriel, or the Time of Return.

And I'm looking forward to both. But OMG is the DigiPak of The New World just gorgeous. I wish everything looked this splendid.

I'm in love with this disc(s). And Booklet. And everything else.

Thank god for Criterion!

Just a FYI to Barnes & Noble members-today is Member Appreciation Day. Until close, the normal 10% in store member discount is doubled to 20%, and it includes movies. I went into my local B&N, and bought Blow Out and My Dinner With Andre, completely unaware of the special. $34.62 with tax is a real nice deal. It's fortuitous that I picked today, of all days, to go back and buy more.
