I heard Criterion was supposed to be re-releasing Blue is the Warmest Color, possibly with the directors cut on there. Is there any news on this?

Criterion stated on their website that a edition with more extras would be released at a later date. Given that was a while ago and nothing has been stated since, I wouldn't hold my breath. Shame, because if you look for stills from the film online you can see some from deleted scenes.

Perhaps Criterion won't get to work on it until they have the involvement of the director.

Documentaries are absolutely movies. One could debate whether a given documentary is 'art' but documentaries aren't just glorified episodes of 60 Minutes.

They are films. Some are good, some are bad, some are phenomenally good, some are phenomenally bad.

But they're definitely films.

They're called documentary films for a reason.

You Must Remember This is a podcast about Hollywood, but not exactly films, more the people. It is my favourite podcast.

I knew documentaries are movies, but the chick was saying they weren't. I'm guessing she was thinking that movies are like Star Trek and Ice Age, and documentaries are on there own. I dropped it after because I didn't want to argue. And I felt like it was going to get uncomfortable in the break room.

Sounds like a company-wide screening of Gates of Heaven is in order.

Or Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera. Sight & Sound''s latest poll puts it among the 10 best movies ever made (and best documentary ever made). It's out on blu from Flicker Alley (US), Lobster Films (FR) and Masters of Cinema (UK).

La Chienne Blu-ray REVIEW

Outstanding restoration

Also, when you get the release, definitely watch the entire documentary from Jacques Rivette. It is excellent.

And a reminder that Fritz Lang's Scarlet Street is already out on Blu-ray via Kino Classics. Another outstanding film very much worth owning

Nothing yet. I saw a 20% member coupon might be out today; that would hit a little later in the morning.

The coupon was emailed out early this morning and it isn't just for members, but it specifically excludes Criterions. It isn't clear yet whether or not it will actually work in stores, however.

Just watched The In-Laws, what a great film, hopefully Criterion will get the rights to another Alan Arkin classic, Freebie and the Bean.

interestingly enough, documetary films are not eligible for votes in the Sight & Sound critics and directors poll.

I had asked Roger Ebert why he didn't vote for Hoop Dreams despite calling it his #1 film of the decade and this is what he told me.

Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera ranked #8 in the critics' poll, #48 in the directors' poll, and #1 in a later documentary poll.

Shucks, I missed this. . Too damn hot last Saturday, so I stayed home.
