I might be in the minority but after watching this, Come Drink with me and Dragon Inn, I am not impressed, the style is fine, the narrative on the other hand feels pretty sloppy on the three, I would say they are all OK films, Come Drink with me was probably the more enjoyable of the bunch for me.

Default The New World

Well, picking up The New World turned out to be harder than expected. Probably should've just paid the S&H and ordered online:

Went to BN by my home right when they opened and they had two DVD copies and one Blu but it was reserved by someone. That someone had to drive an hour from his home to come to this BN and I know this because he came in right after me and told me. I was a little pissed but told him he had good taste in movies and took off. After calling three other BN's in my area I finally found a store that had ONE single copy about 30 minutes from my home.

I wanted to get this right away for that 50% off Criterion sale that ends in a few days so I decided to drive out there and pick it up. When I got there the woman ringing me up told me that someone had called seconds after me also looking for the Blu-ray version. Again they only had two DVD copies that nobody freakin' wanted. I even told her it makes no sense for a serious collector(people who buy Criterion) to want this on DVD over BR.

It's not really badly damaged but it's bad enough that I'm gonna wait it out and see if I can find another copy that's more minty fresh within the next two weeks. It's gonna be hard to wait to watch this but I've waited this long. I'm just glad to finally have it in my posession as it seems to be more in demand than BN expected. It's also $50 instead of $40 so I'm darn glad I got it for half off.

Easily one of my favorite films.

But as I've said before, I'm a HUGE Deneuve fan, so I'm a bit biased.

I showed up at B&N this morning when the store opened I was able to grab a copy along with this other guy. The remaining handful were already being held for pick-up. I got there at the right time. Five minutes later and I probably would have been out of luck. I have a feeling trying to grab a copy right off the street will be tricky today.

Then they should change their plans.

Seriously, if they can show Jules and Jim on TCM, why can't they show Double Indemnity on Filmstruck? I think they're missing an opportunity here.

edit: I guess this my last comment on this topic as it's kind of drifting away from Criterion matters.

Went to pick up The New World at the Southpoint-Durham B&N location and somebody had reserved both blu-ray copies for themselves. Needless to say I immediately called another Durham location and reserved my copy for pick-up after work. I did however pick this up while I was at the Southpoint location:

I called the Glendale store around 9:18 AM and reserved a copy. I notice you live in WeHo, so I'm guessing you went to The Grove location.

Yes, I went to the Grove. Thankfully I do not live too far from the store.

Anyone here seen Shoah? Is it pretty one a "one and done" film that is hard to watch more than once or does it have good replay value?

Do you make exceptions for something like The Haunting? If so, definitely give The Innocents a look. It's a great 'things that go bump in the night' type horror movie and the transfer is spectacular.

Another B&W that might make the cut is Diabolique. It's very creepy, very atmospheric and very Psycho in its sensibilities.

And yeah, I'll second (or third or tenth or whatever we're up to now) the two Polanskis. Rosemary's Baby in particular has been a huge favorite of mine since I was a kid.

Well, it's an essential viewing for anyone, I think, but I will admit that after my initial viewing, I had no intention on revisiting it anytime soon, more-so because of the commitment factor than the subject matter. Jump ahead a year and a half: I'm living with my friend in Europe and we're about to travel a couple of weeks, two of those stops being Munich and Krakow. Told my friend about the film because we intended on going to Dachau and Auschwitz, so we ended up watching it together in two sittings. It wasn't something I was planning on, but I was just as floored by every spoken word and Lanzmann's audacious approach. It's utterly engaging from the very beginning and you'll find yourself wanting to watch more than you initially intended. My friend's reaction mirrored mine, and it made those two visits even more poignant.

So, no, I don't think it's a one-and-done viewing. It's a mammoth of a film, deservedly so, and should - or could - be experienced more than once.

It's not the end of the world people, if you can't get The New World today, you'll get it eventually. Although, I can understand the "kid in a candy store" excitement.

I think it's more of a "kid in a candy store where all the candy is half-off for only 5 more days and the candy you've been waiting for all month is all taken before the candy store even opens it's doors."

That's why there's a thing called "Pre-Order." So you can avoid situations like this.

If you live in the Los Angeles area and always wanted to see Fantastic Planet on the big screen, now's your chance. Cinefamily (The Silent Movie Theater) is showcasing it for several nights starting today:

http://www.cinefamily.org/films/anim...-restoration-2

I saw F.W. Murnau's The Last Laugh there and it was a lot of fun.
