I watched Umberto D last night on Hulu.
Between that and Bicycle Thieves, how many cinema lovers do you think Vittorio De Sica has turned into suicidal alcoholics? If you don't see me again...tell the world my story. ![]() |

I got Seven Samurai and Rashomon in today from Amazon and I should have been getting The Hidden Fortress, but the Postal Service has really screwed the shipping on it. I am really interested to see the new Magnificent Seven so I finally swung for Seven Samurai because it's been a few years since I've seen it as part of a Film As Art class I took. I really enjoyed it then so it will be fun to revisit. And those bonuses too.

I watched My Darling Clementine after not having seen it for years. I remember thinking after that initial viewing that it was Ford at his best and I still hold that belief. Its scope is more limited than, say, The Searchers, but that allows it a startlingly more intimate display of character against a familiar backdrop. There are times where Ford just lets the silence linger on his characters, particularly Earp, and it almost makes the viewer uncomfortable at how introspective it can feel. Fonda particularly shines with this against-the-grain method, what with his lanky demeanor and gentle delivery. He's so at ease with the frame, even when the chaos inevitably ensues. Film is also beautiful to look at, particularly during the night scenes (the first encounter between Earp and Doc highlights this.) You're ultimately left with the feeling of its characters than any conventional set pieces.
Everything clicks together just right that you have an understanding for why the genre can rank among the best of what cinema has to offer. That final shootout is just fantastic filmmaking. Last edited by SammyJankis; 08-02-2016 at 07:16 PM. |
