Yeah, I don't know why this is so hard for people to get. Plus, having it on Criterion is a lot more reliable than a Wiki, or some other random site which may disappear, or may be missing info that would never be corrected.

I get that. It is pain to look through something like this:

http://criterionlaserdiscs.tumblr.com/

and this isn't very detailed, but give some indication which further research can help with:

I own a whole mess of Criterion Titles, including some on Laser Disc.

The number of people that would actually seek out a Laser Disc for the special feature that isn't on a DVD/Bluray release is truly minuscule.

I get the point, but realistically virtually no-one would actually care, and not to mention it would make them look less than ideal if they are showing a whole bunch of special features that didn't get ported to a more recent release.

Has anyone indicated that is why they would like this information? To determine if they are going to seek out a LD copy?

Other than the knowledge of "it exists" why would someone care to have the info then?

And effectively yes, a few posts above: "t would be nice to be able to see what special features they included on their laser disc releases, to compare them to other releases. "

Nostalgia tonight - not seen this one before, rather excited - all these Tarkovsky screenings are being shown late though and I have just finished a 12 hour shift (no breaks) so these have been extra challenging films but so rewarding.

So thankful they have been screening these films and only cost me £5 a film!

To know the feature exists? To then have the option to seek it out to on youtube, or another region's dvd or blu release? If a feature is a documentary or additional film, to seek out a stand alone release? To have a better idea of what a certain critic or expert has professionally contributed to?

I wouldn't imagine I would ever seek out a LD and a LD player, but I would have plenty of use for the information. Just weird to assume the only benefit of the info would be people who would then seek out the specific LD.

If I write a letter to Criterion every day requesting standalone releases of Koyaanisqatsi and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, what are the chances that:

1. I'll get a response?

2. Have an influence on their releases?

3. Be the Andy Dufresne of the Criterion community?

I've been on a Criterion hiatus the last 3 weeks (up to season 4 binge watching Game of Thrones), but got a chance to see The Confession last night. Costa-Gavras can take a political system I know little about and suck me into the story like none other. This started slow for me, but like the methods used in the film it wore and wore until I physically and mentally exhausted myself. Solid 8/10.

I would place this ahead of Z, but consider Missing his best film by far. State of Siege is next in the queue. August is going to be a light movie month for me, but I'll try to make up some ground in the next week.

State Of Siege is actually my favourite of the lot. I really like his Betrayed too, and the Hollywood movie Mad City.

You'd want to have a list of releases made in an obsolete format... releases that were selected with different criteria than that with which the company chooses films today, to find out about films? or to lead you to find out about the possible availability of those films in non-defunct formats?

I don't get it.

Having been a fan and collector of Criterion releases for almost 30 years now, I don't see that Criterion's criteria for choosing films today is any different than it was in the laserdisc days. The only "criterion" that's different is the availability of licenses for titles (well, and the plethora of more recent titles that weren't around back then). Do you really think that Criterion would not be releasing titles like Citizen Kane, High Noon, Blade Runner, Lawrence of Arabia, Forbidden Planet, etc. on Blu-ray today if those were available to them now?

I remember I sent a bunch of emails asking about future Naruse releases, and it went from getting those standard automated responses to no response at all. I love Criterion, but they really don't communicate well like other companies do.

Not sure there's much to "get". Let's say Criterion's LD release of Citizen Kane had an interesting documentary about Orson Welles that isn't on the current releases of Citizen Kane. If I like Orson Welles, this world be helpful information, which I can then use to then try and locate the documentary on youtube, or maybe another region's release that includes it.
