By the way last night I had a weird dream about The Thin Red Line. In my dream, I recall knowing the film was split into two volumes (Volume 1 and Volume 2). While watching the first part of the film, it was very different and went into the life of Jim Caviezel's character, showing him in his house with his family before he went off for war. It also showed him fighting in a previous war before WW2, as a special ops soldier, and how he dealt with the trauma there. Then around the 100 minute mark, the DVD ended abruptly and I was with a bunch of friends and I told them that we should continue the film (part 2) in a few nights. I remember it was a perfect moment to take a break too and it was already late at night. Anyway, there's my The Thin Red Line dream story for today.
It won't disappoint JW!

Some very tranquil dreams you have there! I find myself inside sleaze or real world terror night after night. It's either straw dogs or 9 1/2 weeks in my head.

Also, put me down for Klute going into the Criterion Collection. That's one I've never seen, but a.) whenever we're talking films of the 70s, my father always brings up how much he loves the film, and b.) the film has a fantastic cast. Jane Fonda and Roy Scheider, alone, would interest me. But Donald Sutherland in a movie makes it a must watch. I've never seen him give a performance that wasn't absolutely riveting. Doesn't matter if he's a lead (M*A*S*H, Ordinary People), or in more of a supporting role, even if he only appears on screen for 10-15 minutes (JFK, Animal House, Backdraft, A Time to Kill) --no matter how strong the film is, he's invariably the best thing about the movie.

Don't Look Now will be making its way to my house when the Flash sale goes live. I've never seen it, either, but I've heard it's one of his greatest performances, so I'm absolutely in. Plus, it will serve as a nice introduction to Nicolas Roeg's work.
Give Steelyard Blues a try. Don and Jane as well as Peter Boyle

I'm very impressed with the way Kobayashi films play out - developing a great story supplemented with swordplay, rather than the other way around. Mifune was great, and very likeable in "Rebellion".
Explore Masaki Kobayashi's other works as well.

Nice to hear from you again Andrew.

The New World is one of my fave. films of all time so yes, I know it will not disappoint!

And man, your dreams are indeed lucid. I'll gladly keep mine.

I have an amazon gift card, so thinking about picking up 3 Women or Kiss Me Deadly since they're pretty well discounted right now, even though neither are at the top of my wish list. Anyone think either of these are a must buy? (Also kind of considering Wenders' Road Trilogy, but most people seem to agree that Wrong Move isn't a great movie to own...and therefore you're really paying $60 for two movies).

Are the UK Criterions, like Cat People, both Region A & B?

If you really mean that you'd bring back Orson!!!

I love that avatar so much I would volunteer to watch A Safe Place again if you ever chose to bring it back.

Yup. Youll only find substantially more lucid dreams in Nagisa Oshima's head.

Depends. would you prefer to know what's inside Marsellus Wallace's briefcase or Shelley Duvall's head?

I think they're both excellent movies, well worth owning.

3 Women is one of my favorite Altmans, though it is very unlike, say, Nashville or Short Cuts if his large-scale movies are your reference—it routinely gets compared to things like Mulholland Dr. and Persona for being more of an elliptical chamber drama. There was a pretty good discussion of it here a few pages back. It was one of the first Criterion I bought when I started buying Blus...

And I just saw Kiss Me Deadly on 35mm a few weeks ago and liked it even more. It's very high on my list of ones to get when I get a little further away from my most recent viewing.

Wrong Move can be a chore if you're not in the right mood for it. It's essentially a feature length soul search. Introspection over action. I can appreciate it for what it sets out to do but it's not as strong as Kings of the Road or Alice. Ideally, you could swap out Wrong Move for Paris, Texas.

Kiss Me Deadly is a very safe choice if you enjoy noir. Terrific film.

I've seen Kwaidon as well, and liked it very much too. While watching Samurai Rebellion the beautiful screen composition was immensely apparent to me. I'd really like to see it on blu-ray.

It's a good film, but I feel it has been extremely overpraised. I actually prefer 2046, but I know I'm in a minority on that.
I won't say I prefer 2046 but I think it' just as great.

You're literally one of the only people here on this forum that still remembers that avatar of mine. Wow, we're old timers aren't we!

I'll think about bringing back that avatar. For now I'll gratify your deepest, most perverse Orson desires with a tease of Orson for now:

Now you know I also created an alternate avatar too:

Which one do you like more?

I wish the whole Rebel Samurai Sixties Boxset would go to blu. I rewatched Samurai Rebellion and Kill! over the weekend. Two of my favorites. You really can't go wrong with Nakadai and Mifune and to have them both in one movie and directed by Kobayashi just cements it as a classic. Amazing film.

Speaking of Kobayashi I should be getting my UK The Human Condition trilogy any day now. I wonder when Criterion will get around to it. Coming in at over 9 hours I'll be glued to the screen for a long time.
