Agree! This dvd gets scarce sometimes though (I'm still not real clear if it's in print or not), and with no other solid options available, I like to let people know.

Sounds like people liked Koreeda's new one at TIFF this year.

And while we're talking Koreeda, has anyone picked up Our Little Sister for US dvd or blu release?

I seem to remember that pretty recently you used to be able to buy cover art for several titles on Criterion.com. I need cover art for Chungking Express and Bottle Rocket. I emailed Criterion about this five weeks ago with no reply. I emailed them again a week ago and no reply.

Does anyone know if these are still available and if so how I would go about ordering them? Maybe it was operator error but I looked through their site and couldn't locate the aforementioned cover arts - that I had previously found on there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Likewise. I may pick the DVD up. It's just disappointing that Milestone have had the license for Maborosi for years yet haven't done anything with it.

Unless they got the rights for all her other films, the only Kelly Reitchardt film I see them releasing is Certain Women (her latest) since IFC has the rights.

As for Smoczynska, The Lure is her directorial debut and that has no distributor information on IMDb, so we'll see

There isn't anything else they'd have the rights to. Oscilloscope has River of Grass, Meek's Cutoff (both of which have been released on BD) and Wendy and Lucey. Cinedigm has Night Moves (and released it on BD). And Kino's DVD of Old Joy is still in print, so they must still have the rights to that.

I do not believe they still sell them. Haven't for a long time. Ebay is probably your best bet.

Criterion's release of the Cat People is wonderful, the transfer is immaculate.
Isle of the Dead (1945) is one of my personal favorites. I went into it blind, and absolutely loved it. More so than the popular I walked with a zombie (1943).

Chungking Express it out of print so you definitely can't buy that anymore.

Bottle Rocket you should be able to. From a previous email I had with them, they're $5 each (includes S&H): Payment can be made via PayPal to store@criterion.com. Please include your name and address in the message field, along with the item(s) you are ordering, and as soon as we receive payment, we'll ship them out to you!

Any time I've needed a replacement case and artwork I just paypal them the money directly with the request. There's no need to send an email asking if they can do it.

No, you're not misremembering. Zardoz was included in the Nov/Dec 2015 sale at SAE, and the June 2016 sale at Twilight Time.

Well I'm almost all of the way through the Les Blank set and what a joy it has been! If you like flowers, food or music this is for you; the sheer joy of being shines through almost every frame of these documentaries and the 16mm colour photography is a delight! The extras are pretty good too, especially as some are made up of outtakes from the "main" films.

Think I'll move onto the Levon Helm disk after this. Are there other Les Blank disks in the collection?

the western poll that is going on in another thread here has piqued my interest in seeing Shane. curious thing, though, that it was released by Warner Brothers and it is OOP.

anyone know who has the rights now? it is available through Eureka in the UK as part of their Masters of Cinema series.

Could this be a forthcoming Criterion release?

It's owned by Paramount, but was released on BD by Warner as part of their distribution deal with Paramount for catalog titles. There seems to be some question as to the exact status of that deal. Some say that it expires at the end of the year (it was supposed to be a 3-year deal, and it started in Jan 2013), some say it was extended, some say it's been ended already. At any rate, word seems to be that Universal will be taking over the distribution for Paramount's catalog titles.

At any rate, it appears to be available at a decent price (CA$14.39, about US$11) at Amazon.CA. Current prices at Amazon US appear to be double the original MSRP.

cool. thanks, jay. I wouldn't have thought about Canada, but I'll check out the Amazon.CA site.

Wow. Shane is one of my top ten all-time westerns. The story is classic, but it's also a beautifully shot film with great compositions both indoors and out. Loyal Griggs won a well-deserved Oscar for his work. Surprised it has gone out of print so quickly but I guess it's due to the Warner/Paramount deal expiring.

It's possible, I guess, that Criterion could release it with more extras, but they couldn't make it look any better. It's beautiful. I think I'll take it for another spin tonight.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching every documentary in the Les Blank set (Always for Pleasure) last year (2015). I was particularly fond of Gap-Toothed Women and Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers. I found a guilty pleasure through God Respects Us When We Work, but Loves Us When We Dance too. There are two other standalone Les Blank films in the collection too, one of which I own (Burden of Dreams). The other and newer release is A Poem Is a Naked Person, available on both blu-ray and DVD.

I think Les Blank is one of the greatest documentary filmmakers ever and its great he's so well represented in the collection.
