My wife and I are watching a bunch of the films Criterion has on Hulu before they part ways (I will get Filmstruck if can manage to from Australia, once they have Apple TV support). All of these were viewed for the first time.
The Exterminating Angel - My first feature by Luis Buñuel. I saw Un chien andalou in art school. Didn't think all that much of it at the time, but I was young and dumb then. Anyway, we really loved this film, creepy but light at the same time. Very funny, and very biting. Impressive that it manages to do all of these things, and doesn't get 'on the nose' with its satire either. Not quite convinced to pick up the blu-ray, but might pick it up on a whim sometime. Elevator to the Gallows - Much more in my wheelhouse, we will definitely pick this up when a blu ray comes out. The only Louis Malle film we had seen before is Vanya on 42nd Street, which we both really loved, so it's kind of surprising we're only just getting around to watching another of his films, especially this one, as we love noir films. This film is just delightful. Playtime - Our first Tati film. Not sure if it was the best first one, exactly, but we really enjoyed it. It's a delightful film that feels quite unique. The story feels incidental, which isn't unusual in a comedy film, but the comedy almost feels incidental too. Which isn't to say it isn't funny, but it's often very underplayed, understated. Yet the film is full of big ideas, elaborate sets, and ends with a very loud and elaborate restaurant scene, somehow the jokes just happen, often tucked away in the corner. It almost reminds me of the feel of a Naked Gun movie, only without the excesses of those films. Not at all what I expected going in. And then the end of the film feels almost like Fellini in his experimental period. Very interested to watch another Tati film. Late Spring - Our first Ozu too. I know people never stop praising Ozu, but on paper, his films never seemed that interesting to me, and I'm sure this movie in the hands of a different director wouldn't have been much, but with Ozu directing it's beautiful and charming. Yes, we are very on board for more Ozu. |

The Exterminating Angel is one of those films that people read far too much into. It's a pretty simplistic bourgeois bash, that's what makes it work. Nothing more, nothing less.
It is a very good film, but like most Bunuel films that attack the upper classes in an overly symbolic fashion, there is a flatness to it that prevents me from raving. |

I rate PlayTime as one of the greatest films ever made. Watching the special features afterward and learning that every single item in that film was part of a magnificently constructed movie set, from the office buildings and escalators to the city streets to the dazzling interiors, just blew me away. Nine years in the making, nothing on such a scale had ever been attempted in France before. PlayTime is a cinematic marvel.... and a colossal commercial flop that ruined Tati financially. As much as I enjoy the character of Hulot in PlayTime, my favorite Hulot films are the first two: Mr. Hulot's Vacation and Mon Oncle. Especially Mon Oncle. That movie is side-splittingly funny while delivering a heartwarming message about the joys of life and family. Last edited by oildude; 10-17-2016 at 02:56 AM. |

Those two sentences don't compute. Love Grant, but blind buying His Girl Friday..
![]() Wish Criterion would also get The Philadephia Story , Arsenic and Old Lace and The Awful Truth. Feels like I've been waiting for ages to see Bluray releases for those. Also wouldn't mind seeing Mr Blanders Builds His Dream House & Bringing Up Baby . |
