There’s absolutely no logical explanation to this but the 160 min Anatomy of a Murder happens to be my most watched blu, criterion or otherwise. It invariably is the movie I turn to when I have a good 2-3 hrs to kill and I’m not in the mood to venture into something new. To some extent Mann’s The Insider also falls in the same category. I love these films Anatomy is especially both gripping and amusing in equal dozes. Preminger’s direction in those long scenes is so restrained - the camera seldom moves, there are no snappy edits or frenetic cuts and the legal proceedings are so organically shot while capturing the energy of a controversial trial in the 50’s. There is never a dull moment or a sequence that drags. Have seen Advise & Consent just the one time and remember liking it quite a bit. The mouth-watering ensemble was the biggest draw going in but I was also fascinated with the inner political workings. Unsurprisingly, it was a Laughton show through and through. I also saw Preminger’s final movie The Human Factor a while back. It has an intriguing premise as most Graham Greene adaptions do and revolves around a mole hunt in the foreign office of the British secret service. Stocked with British veterans like Richard Attenborough, John Gielgud, Robert Morley etc. the film is an extremely serviceable espionage thriller that woefully breaks down towards the end of the second act but for a 2 hour movie it never gets tedious. It most certainly is nowhere near some of his fantastic noirs of the 40’s/50’s but is well-crafted and is well worth the indulgence. |

I'm 40 minutes into the film and I can relate. I'm gonna get somethin' to eat and then go to bed. I generally have a strong dislike for movies ABOUT nostalgia or trying to instill a feeling of nostalgia. This is coming from a guy who feels nostalgia for just about everything from my childhood. It's mine though, and I'm not interested in being sold somebody else's. It's for this reason I can't stand the schlock that is Cinema Paradiso. Hopefully this improves but it's not looking promising.
On a positive note, I watched Watership Down earlier and absolutely loved it. Last edited by Rich Pure Doom; 11-24-2016 at 03:49 AM. |

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
My Criterion shipment from B&N came Wednesday, but I didn't get a chance to look at them other than to make sure it was the 4 I ordered. Hope everyone gets the ones they wanted. I got: Paris, Texas (a fave, haven't seen in years) La haine (a blind buy but I think it's the type of film I like) Revanche (another blind buy but someone on hear gave a description so looks like my kind of film) Homicide (another blind buy but I'm crazy about Mamet) |

I love nostalgia and Malickian type films and these should've been right up my street but they left me cold. Maybe it's just this director? In Sunset Song... [Show spoiler]
