Forgive me for being blunt, but in Belle du Jour, you can visibly see the outline of Catherine Deneuve's magnificent body clearer than any other film that I have seen her in. In addition, her acting, in this film, is at her most vulnerable in her career. (More than Tristana; more than Repulsion.)

I was hoping this would be released . There seems to be not enough B&W Cinemascope films being annouced lately.

On the subject of rewatching movies...

I've rewatched all of the James Bond 007 movies multiple times. My rewatch number even for the Bond movies that I've revisited least often is still in the double digits. I still laugh at all of the double entendres, even though I've heard them all hundreds of times.

I've rewatched The Shawshank Redemption about 40 or 50 times. I still get a chill down the back of my neck when Andy is first reported missing from his cell, and I still get a lump in my throat during the final scene.

I've probably rewatched Stand By Me about 100 times during the past three decades. I still crack up at various scenes and I still get emotional during various scenes.

I've rewatched my current all-time favorite movie, Out of the Past, about 25 times. It's just cinematic perfection, though and through.

As far as Criterion Collection movies go, I've rewatched Le Samouraï, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge, The Third Man, In a Lonely Place, The Vanishing, The Killers, The Night of the Hunter, Godzilla, Seven Samurai, and Paris, Texas all into the double-digit numbers.

Don't even get me started on the The Maltese Falcon, Double Indemnity, Casablanca, Alfred Hitchcock movies, the first two Indiana Jones movies, the original Star Wars trilogy, the five original Planet of the Apes movies, the original 1933 King Kong, the first four Rocky movies, the first two Friday the 13th movies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful, Better Off Dead, Pretty in Pink, National Lampoon's Animal House, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Enter the Dragon, Top Gun, Risky Business, Pulp Fiction, Caddyshack, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Die Hard, Alien, Predator, etc.
I've lost count with all of those movies.

Sometimes, I notice something new about each of these movies with each revisit, and sometimes I don't, but I always get nearly the same emotional catharsis while seeing them again.

Oh... I've seen Road House (1989) about 15 to 20 times, and it rocks my face each time.

In honour of Kirk Douglas' 100th, it would have been nice if someone had had released Lonely are the Brave, which he's said in the past is his favourite of his films. Terrific film, great B&W Cinemascope

I agree, but that someone would have to be Universal. It could happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

Finished the Antoine Doinel box set from Artificial Eyes.

They pretty much are best to worst in order of release date, with The 400 Blows being one for the ages , and with clearly different tone than the other 3.

I would say Stolen Kisses (2nd) can stand on it's own too, not far behind of The 400 Blows even if it is a very different film, this one is very funny but it clearly shows Truffaut in control with a style only he could do and perfectly changing tone when it needed to bring more serious themes.

It is also nice to see I am not alone regarding Delphine Seyrig sexy voice , she definitely steals the movie in her brief appearance here.

Bed and Board is also very good and a perfect transition to more mature subjects, there are some very genuine romantic moments here, it is almost like the main characters were a real life couple at times.

Love on the Run unfortunately relies heavily from scenes from earlier films, which is a pity because there are some great moments here too but the experience is hindered when suddenly Truffaut decides to cut to a 5 minutes scene from another film, most of those scenes were great in their own movie context, but here they don't work for the most part.

In some of the supplements there is mention that to Truffaut knowledge this was the only time such a project was made using the same actors and characters over so many years (at least not counting documentaries), couldn't help but bring the comparison with Boyhood, this series took 20 years to make so take that Boyhood, this obviously means this is much better (like 8 years better )

Linklater could stil beat Truffaut though, If he adds one more film to the Before Trilogy

Man, very few directors got better performances out of actors than John Cassavetes. I've been going through his box set chronologically at a pretty slow pace (a year plus), but just got around to watching "Killing of a Chinese Bookie". Ben Gazzara gives one of the best male performances of all-time in that film. Gena Rowlands was ludicrously good in a "A Woman Under the Influence", but Gazzara is just as great in "Chinese Bookie". Gazzara's acting in the phone booth scene is just incredible. What's also interesting is the main actress in the film, Azizi Johari, had just been featured as the Playmate of the Month. It would seem bizarre today if a Playmate of the Month, with very little experience in acting, was cast in a film the caliber of "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie". And she gives a solid performance.

I assume you already saw Faces, Lynn Carlin wasn't even an actress before that, and she even got an Oscar nomination for that role.

I was quite surprised to learn that from the supplements.

Fascinating, didn't know that. I need to dig more into the supplements on "Faces" and "Shadows", including watching "A Constant Forge". I thought "Faces" was an incredible film. I did watch the interviews on the "Chinese Bookie" disc and I don't know that I've ever heard an actor talk more glowingly about a director than Gazzara does about Cassavetes.

I finished watching these films recently too, just last week in fact. I had seen Antoine and Colette and Stolen Kisses but not the other two. I wasn't too impressed with either of them, but then Truffaut really isn't for me outside of 400 Blows. I find him watchable but completely unremarkable. The Doinel films get worse as they series goes on.

Some directors click while others don't. It is what it is and it is entirely subjective.

To answer your question, it depends on the film, but I like to space out my viewings of classic films like Raging Bull or Solaris or The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I don't want to tire of them.

I understand that feeling, I feel that describes what I feel with some of his later films, is like his style is so subtle or he tones down the cinematic tricks to the point that if you don't care much for the story it is very hard to be engaged, although I sometimes find my patience being rewarded in the long run because of the atmosphere this pacing builds over time.

I guess that's why Jules and Jim is probably still my favorite of his, it's like he decided to try everything with a very playful style, kinda like if he went in full Godard mode, without the politics of course but more sentimental.

Ride The Pink Horse is great yes?

Or just pretty good?

Or just average noir?

And please no sophomoric jokes about the title.

...let's try to be mature about this.

Really a shame that Truffaut passed away when he did.

...Antoine would've been a fascinating character to revisit in his old age.

I'd go with pretty good. Knowing you, you will probably somewhat enjoy it but sell it a week later.

And it's not nearly as good as The Killers imo.

I thought Ride the Pink Horse was very safe and average.

Then again, there's only a few great film-noirs in my opinion -- The Big Sleep, In a Lonely Place, and The Killers.
