Definitely. I watched it again a couple months ago and it never really hits a wrong note for its entire running time. It's arguably Hoffman's best performance IMO. The supporting cast is amazing as well with Harry Dean Stanton, Gary Busey before he lost his mind, an incredibly sexy Theresa Russell, and M. Emmet Walsh. The scene where Hoffman handcuffs Walsh to the fence on the side of the freeway is just legendary.

As far as upgrades, I'd love to see them prioritize upgrading a lot of those early spine numbers that came out in the early 2000s that are looking pretty rough now. Some I would like to see...
Le Samourai (nobody seems to want that upgraded ![]() Andrei Rublev The Ruling Class I Vitteloni The Passion of Joan of Arc The Lady Eve Big Deal on Madonna Street The Last Wave Juliet of the Spirits Red Beard Schizopolis The Devil and Daniel Webster Secret Honor Onibaba I'd be happy if 2 or 3 of these got upgrades, seeing as they don't upgrade many titles these days. |

I don't think MGM would drop Fargo. But Miller's Crossing wouldn't be unlikely. Raising Arizona might be a bit much, but I'd adore it.

Actually, I forgot some titles.
Criterion should also release- -Romper Stomper -The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert -The Castle -The Dish, and -Muriel's Wedding These films have mostly been neglected in the American market. Here in Australia, these films reign supreme. I really hope Criterion does release these films soon, I'm sure they would fit very well into the collection. |

Look, give me Vampyr, Le Samourai (or just some more Melville), Stalker and a couple more Film Noirs, and I'll be about as happy as I can possibly be.

Some great suggestions have been made so far, I would love to see many of the new suggestions, though personally hope that upgrades are the primary focus in the new year.
Lars Von Trier has The Element of Crime and Europa already in the collection and lacking blu-ray releases and I would personally love an excuse to revisit his early work especially in the case of Element of Crime as it is so visually entrancing. Many have already suggested Dancer in the Dark and that would be year-makingly fantastic, but I might add that his America duology of Dogville and Manderlay would be quite exciting to see, though I would be happy with any Trier quite frankly. Far too few of David Lynch's films have received blu ray releases at all, for this reason alone I would be relatively dissapointed to see Blue Velvet added as its current release is more than satisfactory. While Lynch is yet another director whom any film release would be exciting, my personal favorites to get that criterion release would be Lost Highway and especially Inland Empire. Todd Solondz appears to have found some luck recently with Megan Ellison taking him on board with her Annapurna revolution, though admittedly this may have changed with the frosty reception Wiener Dog received earlier this year. I've yet to see that (I'll probably like it), but wholeheartedly agree with an earlier poster that Happiness would be a great addition and I would add that I would be ecstatic to see Palindromes released later on down the road. Haneke has a new film next year and Criterion just released Code Unknown in the past year so it would be nice to see more of his added as well with The Piano Teacher being the chief candidate. Finally, the film I would love to see added more than any is Harmony Korine's Gummo which is, in my opinion, one of if not the greatest film of the nineties. I understand this is high praise for a largely detested film, but Korine is such an adventurous filmmaker and his debut is unlike any other film I've seen. Since this post is long as it is I'll keep my other hopes for release in the new year to a list Andrei Rublev (or any other Tarkovsky but this especially) I Vitelloni (again pretty much any Fellini is appreciated) Flesh for Frankenstein Blood for Dracula The Blood of a Poet & Testament of Orpheus Cléo from 5 to 7 Fishing with John Beastie Boys Anthology Salesman I am Curious... (Blue and Yellow) Shoot the Piano Player (or any Truffaut) Stranger Than Paradise Night on Earth In summation, they should just let me choose what they release for the next year ![]() Last edited by vader4; 12-28-2016 at 09:27 AM. |

This is not exactly Criterion-related (not yet anyway), but I'm curious as to what others in this thread consider to be their top 10 new movies of 2016.
I compiled my own list this morning... 1. The Witch 2. Green Room 3. Nocturnal Animals 4. Frank & Lola 5. The Wailing 6. Don't Breathe 7. La La Land 8. The Shallows 9. Captain America: Civil War 10. Hell or High Water It's been a fine year for movies, so I had a difficult time narrowing everything down to a top 10. Several other great selections just barely missed the list (Allied, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Arrival, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Manchester by the Sea, etc.). The Witch premiered at Sundance in 2015, but I'm counting it as a 2016 film since it received a theatrical release in February. |

All three of those would be excellent upgrades. After reading all the upgrade wishes I am sad to see not one mention of upgrades for Lean's adaptations of Oliver Twist and Great Expectations. Both offer beautiful cinematography and excellent storytelling as only Lean can offer. A nice boxed set of both would make me seriously jump for joy.
Just a tidbit of the above mentioned The Browning Version. Years ago I met the wonderful Vanessa Redgrave and she was gracious enough to sit and chat with me. After I gushed over her film library with her I jumped into her father's film library specifically bringing up this film. I told her it was my favorite of his along with Dead Of Night (which would be an excellent Criterion choice) and The Lady Vanishes. Anyone else feel Dead Of Night would be a fine candidate for a Criterion release? |
