I wonder if these are actually big sellers for Criterion. Yeah, they're much higher profile, but they also have previous releases. I know I have no desire to "upgrade" my copy of Moonrise Kingdom, for example. Even The Squid and the Whale gives me pause, and that was previously on a Mill Creek two-pack.

[Show spoiler]

I compiled my own list this morning...

1. The Witch
2. Green Room
3. Nocturnal Animals
4. Frank & Lola
5. The Wailing
6. Don't Breathe
7. La La Land
8. The Shallows
9. Captain America: Civil War
10. Hell or High Water

It's been a fine year for movies, so I had a difficult time narrowing everything down to a top 10. Several other great selections just barely missed the list (Allied, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Arrival, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Manchester by the Sea, etc.).

The Witch premiered at Sundance in 2015, but I'm counting it as a 2016 film since it received a theatrical release in February.
Since the site started doing those community polls, I started keeping closer track of that, making write-ups and everything.

My review for 2016 in film won't be all that flattering. Granted there's still a ways to go (haven't even seen Rogue One yet ), but I have been let down repeatedly, from both blockbusters and arthouse. I'm still on the fence as to whether my #1 pick deserves the full 5/5 or not, but it's pretty darn close. Couple of 4/5s, then the remaining 30 or so I graded less.

So, my top 10 of 2016 currently looks like this:
  1. The Neon Demon (4.5/5-ish--held up great on a re-watch and chances are good I'll up the score in the future)
  2. The Wailing (4.5/5--loved the experience of watching it, not sure if the plot will hold up under scrutiny)
  3. Arrival (4/5--good, plain and simple)
  4. Zootopia (4/5--good, plain and simple)
  5. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (3.5/5--haters be damned, at least half of this was pretty spectacular)
  6. Nerve (3.5/5--I like it precisely because it's safe, feel-good entertainment)
  7. Ip Man 3 (3.5/5--maybe a little derivative, but the character and story arcs jived well with me personally)
  8. X-Men: Apocalypse (3.5/5--didn't think it was that bad, I still loved the character arcs and overall quality)
  9. Star Trek: Beyond (3.5/5--pretty fun flick)
  10. Doctor Strange (3.5/5--I at least give it credit for showing some insane things no other film has)

Chances are good the bottom half will slide off in favor of better films. I still gotta see: Rogue One, Kubo and the Two Strings, Train to Busan, The Handmaiden, Deepwater Horizon, Sully, Silence, Fantastic Beasts, and various others. My draft of everything I've seen is here.

I love this movie. It's one of those flicks that won't make a year-end Top 10 list for me, but I'll be revisiting my Blu-ray with more frequency than I would with some movies that actually did appear on my list.

Just the type of B-movie goodness that I live for (sort of like The Shallows, which did make my list).

Yep, it kept me engaged a lot more than I expected, especially considering how closely it adheres to standard YA-fiction tropes. I value the movie a lot for the investment, in both keeping my thinking and making me care (a lot) about the characters.

I did like The Shallows as well, and would put it hand-in-hand with Nerve. I think I pushed it further down my list because of how over-the-top it became towards the end.

I guess I have not seen enough great movies to compose a top ten this year, but Manchester by the sea is easily the best I have watched yet that has been released in 2016.

Finally got a response from "Mulvaney" today...

I didn't care for Swiss Army Man either you're like the only other person I know that didn't care for it. Nice list The Handmaiden is my favorite film of the year.

It's definitely making my top ten. The first 3/4s comprise the the most purely enjoyable moviegoing experience of the year (no small feat as I've seen close to 200 feature films from 2016)

I haven't seen Cameraperson, the lone (?) '16 film CC is releasing soon on BD. I can't wait to finally see it.

Weird.

When I emailed Mulvaney about my defective disc for Carlos, he never even asked me to mail back the defective disc. He just said he was putting a replacement disc in the mail.

...I guess he and I have always had a special relationship.

Nice. I'll have to send our guy "Mulvaney" another e-mail. "Jon" is a stand up dude. He's kept it together through all of Ray's jarringly perverse, deeply psychosexual e-mails. Deserves credit for that. Those may have been the cause for the earlier lack of response.

He did the same for me with Seventh Seal and Howard's End (both had an unplayable spot of five minutes or so) a few years ago. I still have the discs.

One of these days I'm going to have to watch the ones in the defective list that I haven't seen in a while. Le Cercle Rouge included.

I've seen only 16 films released in 2016 (18 if counting The Witch and The Lobster) and most of them have been big films which left me underwhelmed, I have yet to see 9 out of the 10 films on your list

1.-The Lobster
2.-The Witch
3.-Arrival
4.-10 Cloverfield Lane
5.-Midnight Special
6.-Sausage Party

My top ten. It's a bit US heavy, but it's been a good year. That being said, Civil War and Doctor Strange aside, it's been a very poor year for blockbusters. I've not seen Silence yet.

1. Things To Come (Mia Hansen-Løve, FRA)
The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino, US)
Manchester By The Sea (Kenneth Lonergan, US)
American Honey (Andrea Arnold, UK)
Paterson (Jim Jarmusch, US)
De Palma (Noah Baumbach, Jake Paltrow, US)
Love And Friendship (Whit Stillman, US)
Dheepan (Jacques Audiard, FRA)
Creepy (Kiyoshi Kurosawa, JAPAN)
10. Knight Of Cups (Terrence Malick, US)
