I made the mistake of purchasing the Gaumont release which has a poorly encoded transfer. The recently annouced UK box set from ArtificialEye will hopefully do a better job if a Criterion release doesn't pan out.

There's also a French release of Oliver Twist, but it might be locked.

Seeing that cover photo of John Howard Davies makes me wish Criterion would get The Rocking Horse Winner.

Is there any chance Criterion might ever complete Polanski's so-called Apartment Trilogy with The Tenant? The Paramount DVD has been OOP for a few years now.

The ending to The Executioner is pretty darn comical.

[Show spoiler]Jose Rodriguez has a panic attack while the prisoner walking to his death is as cool as a cucumber.

I was just wondering about this today.

I've been considering doing a trial run with FilmStruck, but wasn't sure how it works as far as my blu-ray player goes. When I turn on my player I get the main menu screen, which has links/icons for Netflix, Vudu, Hulu and a bunch of other sites. I can just click on the icon I want and go there, no logging in or anything.

FilmStruck is not one of the links that comes up, so how would I get there?

Having to manually enter in url addresses with my remote is a major pain in the bunghole.

...I ain't doing that for FilmStruck or the Playboy Channel or The Erotic Network or any other digital service on earth.

It's likely that your Blu-ray player doesn't support FilmStruck. I'd tell you to try to update the firmware, but considering that FilmStruck isn't even on a Roku yet (a piss poor decision IMO), it's probably futile to expect it to show up on your Blu-ray player even after a firmware update.

Why not look into getting a Roku? They're pretty cheap. But don't do that yet - FilmStruck, as I posted above, isn't coming to Roku until Spring 2017 (which is a delay from the previous promise of "Early 2017").

Theoretically any blu-ray player that has Wi-Fi can get to FilmStruck right?

...you just have to do it the old-fashioned way?

Theoretically if it has a web browser app, but it would be a big PITA, and might not work depending of what the browser support (I believe the web version of the Filmstruck player uses Adobe Flash).

The way it actually works is you need a compatible device, cheapest would be a Chromecast, but then you need an Android phone with the app as entry point to cast the content.

Roku is more user friendly since it has a remote, although there is also the Amazon Fire Stick with it's interface that is very Amazon centric with ads included, but is a bit of a step up from the lowest end Roku's.

Edit: Actually it seems Roku is the cheapest at least at non-sale prices:
Roku Express = $30
Chromecast = $35
Fire Stick = $40

It was an early blu-ray with a lossy audio track. Very likely that a new scan and encode (with lossless audio) would give much stronger results.

Ray, I first tried FilmStruck using a fire TV stick version 2 but had problems with stuttering / buffering. But now it streams great on my Chromecast version 2. I like it so much I switched my subscription from month-to-month over to an annual subscription.

I had the same problem with HBO Go, but a Roku is so cheap and so user-friendly, I wound up just buying that. Plus, they're really small, so I can move it to whatever TV I want with ease.

I don't know how to feel about L'Avventura anymore.

I have the latest Amazon Fire Stick and I haven't had any problems with stuttering. It takes a few seconds to load its buffer on startup, but after that it's smooth. I bought the stick specifically for FilmStruck and the TCM app and so far I'm happy. I also have a Roku 3 and now a Roku TV. I will say that on things that both devices support like Amazon Video or Netflix, the Rokus seem to have a slightly sharper picture. It will be interesting to compare devices when Filmstruck comes to Roku, but for now no complaints. I'm glad I didn't wait for Roku support.

The Firestick is frequently on sale for $30, but even at $40 it's a good deal once you get past the fact that its primary purpose is to siphon your money to Jeff Bezos. 😄

There are those who can watch their favorite films several times or more a year and then there are those who find greater appreciation when those viewings are spaced out a bit more. Maybe you just belong to the second group.

There is a great scene in Amour where Trintignant tells his wife about how he saw a great film and how on his way back from the theater, he relayed details of the entire plot to someone. As he told the story, he was moved to tears and noted to his wife that while watching the film, he was moved, but not to the same extent as when he shares his movie experience with the friend.

The same thing happens to me all the time. Most recently, when I told my wife about Unforgiven. If you recall the ending, it isnt, by any means, a tear jerker, but recalling the artistry and how it connected with me, I was really moved. Like Trintignant's friend in Amour, my wife had a good laugh at my expense.

My point is, things are sometimes cherished more in memories than they are when we are actually experiencing them. If that real time experience of watching a film for the second or third time within a short time frame doesn't live up to your memory of it, then maybe just let some more time pass before revisiting favorites.

L'Avventura is different...but the same. Things are...answered...but unanswered. Bigger, yet smaller... It's alienation...

The Tenant is my favorite film out of the 3. I would totally take an upgrade of that to Blu ray!
