Rochefort on the other side I was already a fan because of it's more typical musical structure and after listening many times to the songs my appreciation for them has just increased, it's full of silly story-lines like the one of Simone Dame and his name which oddly has some of the most emotionally effective songs in the film. 9/10

I watched them in this order which is the opposite than the first time I saw them, not sure if it had something to do.
That's interesting to hear... after years of missing Demy showings, I finally rented Umbrellas and... wasn't a fan. It seems like it should be right up my alley—color! melodrama! songs! Deneuve!—but it just didn't click, so Rochefort dropped down my "to be watched" list. If it's a little more typical in its musicalness, though, I may have to bump it back up the list and see if it opens the Demy door for me a little more.

Yes the problem I have with Umbrellas, is that while a lot of the music is actually quite good, it is intertwined with a lot of mediocre melodies, sometimes the changes between good and bad are quite abrupt since all dialog is singed. (In this case for me bad or mediocre are probably the ones that are just transition lines instead of having an identifiable theme)

This combined with weird choices in the mixing (echos at first, music volume changing while vocals enter, some odd musical arrangement that seems to have higher volume than it should) makes for an odd experience if you can't get past that.

Mulvaney's video is just him taking 50+ copies of the surprisingly already produced and completed Criterion blu of Le Samourai off the shelf and putting them into his bag while laughing maniacally.

Reading everyone's comments (and the site's review) about Slacker, I can't help but conjure up images of Harmony Korine's Gummo. Although, Gummo (and Julian Donkey Boy) was more "improvisational" acting than a historical document.

Similar vibe maybe?

I have not seen any either and will have to check them out.

Also a great suggestion, thank you.

I don't know how many copies are left in the wild, but this is a great set if you can find it.

Those high hopes have been met and then some. It's still percolating but it's definitely near the top of the Hawks catalog. I can't see it taking the top spot from The Big Sleep or To Have and Have Not but it's right up there.

And it might even give Arsenic and Old Lace a run for it's money in the Cary Grant catalog.

The transfer is gorgeous and I really liked the Lighting Up with Hildy Johnson feature.

It's a great release and that's not even taking into account the ten or twelve bucks I saved by not grabbing the Kino release of The Front Page.

I actually saw that on Twitter today and thought it was already released by another studio, but it turns out that I was thinking of the 1944 film.

I didn't know Criterion was released Hitchcock's Lodger! Fantastic. I was sad to have missed a screening of it a few months ago.

"Slacker" is my favorite Linklater film and I think it's one of the more fascinating films of the last 30 years. I saw it when I was about 13 years old and it was one of the first things I saw that got me seriously into film. There a ton of influences I see in it. Godard, Altman, even the anarchic sensibilities of Robert Downey Sr. It's an absolutely brilliant movie.

On a Criterion-related note, I recently watched a film called "Rich Kids", which is a criminally underrated movie about kids going through the divorce of parents. Wow, does "The Squid and the Whale" derive heavily from that film. The characters in "Rich Kids" are more nuanced (John Lithgow is basically Jeff Daniels' character without being a major a-hole, Katherine Walker is basically Laura Linney's character without the dramatic moments), but "The Squid and the Whale" is so clearly derived from this film that it deserves mention. "Rich Kids" was directed by the overlooked Robert M. Young, who directed the Criterion entry "Alambrista!", and is available from Olive on BD. "The Squid and the Whale" is a good film, but there needs to be acknowledgement that this film was essentially a template for it.

Based on a recommendation here, last night I watched Rohmer's My Night At Maud's on FilmStruck. Loved this and if it wasn't so late when I finished I would have jumped right into another of his films.

Looking forward to picking up the Six Moral Tales set, but does anyone know if there is any chance of this seeing a BD update in the foreseeable future?

Frequent Criterion contributor Imogen Sara Smith has a new article up for A Place in the Sun (Criterion posted the link in The Current).

https://www.loa.org/news-and-views/1...ce-in-the-sun_

Does Criterion have plans to release this classic?

I sure wouldnt be surprised! George Stevens Jr. has said in the past that there was a restoration of it being prepped and a planned blu ray release of it but its yet to come out, I've always speculated it was because Criterion had it and hadnt found space on their schedule yet. And they ARE one of the only companies that has access to Paramounts classic library.
I also feel like they have Roman Holiday too.

Given the rate at which they've been upgrading DVD releases, to have them upgrade an entire box set would be surprising, to say the least.
