There's a French blu box of his entire filmography, which, if you fall hard for Rohmer, is an easy way to pick up everything in one fell swoop.

Unfortunately it only has subs for his feature films. I picked it up for ~$180 shipped from Amazon IT, so still not bad at ~$8/film with no English-friendly extras, but you may can get it for a bit cheaper if you keep your eyes peeled on the various EU Amazons.

If you end up falling for Rohmer's style in general, it's worth it for just the features. It's also good justification for going region free, if you haven't already And if you can understand French, it's a no-brainer, as it has nearly everything else he ever did in short films, TV, and a few theatre productions. It pains me that the TV piece he did on Dreyer doesn't have subs, for example...

That said, those who like Rohmer tend to fall in two camps: those who see a few and love them but don't really need more, and those who see a few and want everything and anything he touched. So definitely watch a few others to find out which camp you're in.

I recommend La Collectioneuse and Marquise of O on Filmstruck, to get a flavor for Rohmer in color and Rohmer in history, and if you have Netflix, A Tale of Summer was streaming last I checked, so you can see how consistent his late style is with his earlier style. Marquise is also on Amazon Prime, as is Full Moon in Paris (which I haven't seen yet).

Thanks for the recommendation on the BD set. I'm region free so will have to check out. If it was English friendly with the extras, I suspect that if I enjoy the rest of what I queued yesterday between FilmStruck and Amazon Prime, I would be ordering that immediately. Appreciate having that on my radar.

I'm not opposed to DVDs and will probably get the Criterion set if the extras warrant, I just do not want to find myself in a position of buying the DVDs set only to find that I was the only person on the planet who did not know a BD set was planned.

It should be noted and reiterated that The Red Shoes contains one of the greatest moments in film history from both a story perspective and a technical perspective. It's truly unlike anything ever done before or since.

The characters in "Rich Kids" are more nuanced (John Lithgow is basically Jeff Daniels' character without being a major a-hole, Katherine Walker is basically Laura Linney's character without the dramatic moments), but "The Squid and the Whale" is so clearly derived from this film that it deserves mention. "Rich Kids" was directed by the overlooked Robert M. Young, who directed the Criterion entry "Alambrista!", and is available from Olive on BD. "The Squid and the Whale" is a good film, but there needs to be acknowledgement that this film was essentially a template for it.
I have been meaning to watch this again. Been many years since i saw it and i remember being very impressed with it.

It's a fantastic film. The performance by Trini Alvarado one of the better performances by a young actress/actor I've seen. Lithgow, as always, is great as well. And Terry Kiser, famous for playing dead in "Weekend at Bernie's", gives a fun supporting turn.

Kino just announced UNDERGROUND.

I always figured this would be released through Criterion, and even requested it whenever that topic of conversation would come up. I've been wanting to see it for years. I'm just glad someone is putting out and giving it a solid edition.

Will this get a full length video release?

I know when Malick's done these kind of things before he's specified no recordings to be made etc (so no phones too)

I liked when TMZ tracked down Benicio del Toro while he was with Malick. The dolts at TMZ are so insufferable and didn't really know who he was. If you don't have the urge to punch the long-haired dude who doesn't know who Malick is, you might not be human.

It appears Hitchcock's Notorious is OOP from MGM, and so was Spellbound, which is still out of stock via Amazon and starting to fetch higher prices on eBay.
I suspect Criterion will be re-releasing them both.

I'm happy filmstruck is finally usable on gen 1 chromecast with this week's update but I'm still annoyed no roku support yet. They just launched on Android TV but Roku is still "spring"

Just odd to launch with arguably the most prevalent device last

Full story from the April 2017 issue of Texas Monthly. This is a fantastic article and a VERY enjoyable read about Malick. The awesome band Malick is dancing to is Two Tons of Steel (further proof of the brilliant and wonderful Texas country-blues rock music scene).

http://www.texasmonthly.com/the-cult...rrence-malick/

Google the video (it's from 2012) and you'll get a few hits for online blogs/mags that refer to the location as a country dive bar. I guess the term honky-tonk is not part of the urban hipster vocabulary. The Broken Spoke in Austin is one of the best honky-tonks in Texas.
