Now that is a question. I think all of his current blu ray releases are excellent despite the fact that The Hateful Eight is almost disappointingly absent of special features. I'd actually say that one is a great contender. Reservoir Dogs could use a new master.

I hope it's True Romance as the now OOP release leaves much to be desired PQ wise and it's a personal favorite, but I'm sure more members would prefer Reservoir Dogs if possible.

An envelope with an interesting, Scanavo case shaped item just arrived in the mail today, from Amazon, addressed to my wife. My birthday is next Tuesday. Hmm.

Probably my favorite Tarantino involved film! This really does need a quality upgrade.

If Criterion released a 4K scan,my response to them would have to be:

You're so

I'm in complete agreement on True Romance getting a Criterion! True Romance is an incredible film and deserves a better transfer.

Jackie Brown. The only film that Tarantino has brought us that combines a truly great stylistic vision with a touch of grace and human sensibility. The rest of his work, particularly over the last twelve years has suffered from an evident inability on his part to grow either intellectually or artistically, and his efforts now have sunk to self-parody. While some of his more recent ventures have embraced memorable scenes and moments of exquisite drama (the kitchen table scene with the great Christoph Waltz at the start of 'Bastards') they have inevitably devolved into his stock of lurid fantasies of revenge and ultra-violence (the bloodbath in 'Django).

I've actually quite enjoyed much of what Tarantino has done over the years, but his last one I found to be excruciatingly unwatchable, demonstrating just an astonishing degree of self-indulgent excess, devoid of any effort at nuance, self-control, artistic merit, or simple basic human decency. My only thought after fast-forwarding through the last half-hour of "The Hateful Eight" is that Mr. Tarantino, and the rest of us, were fortunate that he was able to find an outlet for his overwrought imagination through the medium of film.

Sorry to be contrarian, but democracy is messy.

I've always been curious about this but after getting tired of waiting for it and buying the current releases separately I have to admit I actually prefer them separately since they are both so different from eachother. I also find part 2 around 30 minutes too long. There's quite a bit of scenes that could've been cut from part 2 with nothing missed even though I prefer it over part 1.

The "it lacks basic human decency" is a weird criticism, as that's the point. I don't like it either, but it's a weird thing to say. I think Django cares about its protagonist a lot more than any earlier film of his apart from Jackie Brown, and deals with violence (well, that against the slaves and not the slave owners) in a much more serious manner than any of his earlier films as well. I think the general consensus on both Inglorious and Django is that they showed MATURITY compared to the earlier ones (well, besides Jackie Brown).

EDIT: I also find this weird in a discussion about how good True Romance is, as that movie is basically adolescent wish-fulfillment with some very tasteless violence (some of the worst offense just due to how Tony Scott shot things - like, oh, here's a woman having the piss beaten out of her, but I have to make the images look awesome, so I better make sure her cleavage still looks amazing!!!). I would be curious to see what the Tarantino version of the same film would have looked like. Surely not as good, but having it without that hyper-studio Tony Scott sheen would have been a huge difference. Seems like that poster doesn't like it either, though. ONLY liking Jackie Brown is definitely a sentiment I can appreciate. There's really nothing else in his filmography to compare to the treatment of Jackie and Robert Forster's character. It's downright wistful!

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair? Or vol. 1 uncut.

I began to question if my perception of the past week has somehow been the accumulation of a single day after entering this thread.

Can anybody tell me if Criterion always releases box sets first and then individual movies from the set, or if they also sometimes release individual movies and then put them into a set? Like would we ever see a Malick set?

Thanks!

It's quite possible, yes.

Criterion released Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, and Brief Encounter, for example, after their respective box sets. However, they released The Rock Box, Andre Gregory/Wallace Shawn, and the Whit Stillman box sets after the standalone releases were already available.

Great post! What you wrote is exactly why I've been avoiding watching The Hateful Eight. But now I'm inspired to watch it, just to see how pathetically bad this movie probably is. (And in which case, when I expect the worst, I'll prob. be delightfully surprised).

The question is: Who has regressed more: Tarantino or Shyamalan? (though I confess, the latter has made a small comeback with his last 2 films)

Sweet Smell of Success should be in every film collection, bar none. I'll write more about this later, but wow...Lancaster and Curtis were fantastic. So was late 50s Manhattan.

I needed to take a shower when the film was over.

I just finished reading Picnic at Hanging Rock in English today, using my copy of the book from Criterion's set. I personally think that this is one of the greatest and most beautifully crafted stories ever told. Reading the book in detail has reminded me of the movie, which I saw a few months back. I'm entirely convinced that both the book and the movie are masterpieces. The way the mystery unfolds and the "ending" should be studied by everyone in schools.
