I would buy it in a heart beat even though I own 3 of the 4 on BD already! I don't know if it could happen though, because of all the different parties involved and the probability that they wouldn't want to use the existing masters (I'm unsure how much better What's Up, Doc? could look, however). It would probably be a very costly undertaking.

The only recent info I can find concerning They All Laughed says that it has been 'screened in a new digital restoration' which says to me 'old master', but perhaps someone here has seen it in a cinema recently and can chime in. I don't recall any films HBO has went back and updated or licensed out, stuff like Gus Van Sant's Last Days that will seemingly never get a BD release. I think the HBO stuff might fall under WB when it comes to rights, though? My doubts aside it would be pretty awesome, especially if Bogdanovich could help load it with special features. Bonus points if it comes with a purple scarf.

I believe that "They All Laughed" is owned outright by Bogdanovich, who used his own money to buy the film back from the studio and release it, when they wanted to bury it following the tragic murder of Dorothy Stratten. On the one hand it means that he's probably willing to license it, but one the other hand, who's gonna pay for the HD master?

You're right, and I never knew that! That's quite interesting. Here is a relevant quote from Bogdanovich on the subject:

[Show spoiler]"It was a nightmare. Dorothy was murdered and I went crazy. I decided I would buy the film back from Fox and I lost my shirt distributing it myself which was insanity. Unfortunately, nobody stopped me. So it didn’t get great distribution because you can’t self-distribute. It’s impossible. For example, we played 15 weeks at the Music Hall in Beverly Hills. It was a huge success. We got a great theatre in Westwood and it broke all the records, and they pulled it right out because Paramount wanted the theatre for Reds."

It seems he licensed it himself for the 2006 DVD to HBO.

I hope so! I brought that one up sometime last year and wasn't met with much optimism. Fingers crossed.

Would love to see a Bd release of They All Laughed.

It's not a great movie, and nowhere close to the classics that LPS and PM are, but I've always been fond of it's raggedy charm.

It's also a better (though still very limited) view of Dorothy Stratton's potential than the woeful Galaxina. I always thought there was quite a bit of potential there, that would have really shined with the proper mentoring and career guidance. Very tragic.

I'll be curious down the road to see how it holds up to a repeat viewing.

Watched Ride With The Devil last night and it was fantastic! Loved the panoramic view on the cinematography, just simply My 'cup of tea'!!

I'm always on the look-out for good Westerns/Civil War + Holocaust/WWII type films on BD/DVDs!!!

Haven't yet seen People on Sunday but just watching the Criterion '3-reasons' clip just now was sobering in itself.

I'd put my money on German shepherds, once they get the 'squirrel' thing under control. Ants? not so much.

If you think that's interesting, try to track down the articles about the full story of the Blu-ray release of "At Long Last Love". Basically, to summarize very very quickly, somebody working in their archive department disliked the theatrical edit and recut the film to incorporate footage that he liked from the dailies, and it went undiscovered for thirty years. This recut version popped up on Netflix and PB found out. He liked the cut (and the fact that the footage still existed), but he used his contractually guaranteed final cut to force the studio (Paramount? I forget which) to let him produce a "final director's cut" of the film *and* release it on Blu-ray (it had never had any home video release before, not even VHS).

Just watched A Story From Chikamatsu (aka The Crucified Lovers) on TCM and the CC logo popped up so I would expect more Mizoguchi in the future. Film is pretty good but I'd put it a tier below his best.

Yes and he went broke trying to self distribute it.

As for the theoretical boxset, Nickelodeon would fit right in if it is the black and white version we are talking about, although for obvious reasons it is a bit too bright looking for my taste. I wish he was able to shoot it in black and white.

Re: Texasville. The demand simply isn't there. The director's cut is better than the theatrical cut though, but it isn't a substantial improvement in my view.

Is it pretty certain that Personal Shopper will get a Criterion release? I haven't scene it yet, but I loved Clouds of Sils Maria.

I bought Paper Moon from Masters of Cinema so I'm sure it will be on Criterion bluray very soon.

Does this mean Tokyo Tribe is getting a Criterion release soon? I inexplicably decided to buy it recently and really now dread the thought that a spine will be wasted on it.

TAL is campy, even for slapstick. But I really like. It's one of those films where the viewer will either love it or feel nothing for it.

It's worth seeing just to get one last chance to watch Audrey Hepburn. John Ritter is good, too. And Dorothy Stratten is luminous.

I've never seen Nickelodeon, so I will defer to your expertise. I'd just love to see a box set of his.

Bogdanovich himself has been pushing for Criterion to put out the director's cut of "Texasville", unseen since the Criterion laserdisc. Unfortunately, Texasville has started showing in HD and it is only the theatrical cut, so they might have an upward battle there.
