I've never seen the Twin Peaks film but is it that good that it requires a rerelease when there are so many other titles that aren't out yet? David Lynch titles alone?

Eh, I just think there's a shitload of films in there and I would guess the guests are asked to pick 5-10 films to discuss a bit. I'm sure most cinephiles could find hundreds of films in there to talk about if you gave them an hour or two. I think the default is for guests to find films that they have long-time experiences with, specifically ones they initially saw when they were young and have total recall of. William Friedkin, Mike Leigh, and Barry Jenkins are examples of this off the top of my head. Going into a small room with the entire Criterion Collection would be overwhelming if you were just asked to talk about a select few films. Most of the people who visit there probably can think of hundreds of other films they would have liked to have talked about.

There would be zero point to them doing it. It would be like them going, "Let's release Luchino Visconti's 'Ludwig' even though Arrow just released the most elaborate edition of that film humanly possible."

Not really. Dekalog was produced for television. It's a TV series that has had theatrical screenings after it had appeared on TV.

But they've also released Fishing with John and Tanner '88.
And Berlin Alexanderplatz.

And the (original) TV versions of Scenes of a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander were included in their releases of the theatrical versions.

Not quite the same thing. The theatrical screenings of Dekalog are exactly the same as the versions shown on TV (leaving aside the two episodes that were edited down from previous theatrical films).

With the Bergmans, the theatrical versions were grossly cut down from the TV versions. Scenes from a Marriage was a 300-minute series cut down to about 170 minutes for the theatrical version. Fanny and Alexander was a 300-minute series cut down to about 190 minutes.

IIRC, Dekalog screened in its entirety at at least one film festival first, before it's run on even Polish television; and two episodes also had concurrent "feature length theatrical" versions in development from the start, as that was the contingency for some of the funding it received. So yes, it was originally developed as a TV series, but it has more of a claim to being thought of as a film series than Tanner '88, for example.

My point was that, if Dekalog were the only "TV series" that Criterion had released, I could see the argument that a Twin Peaks release would be unprecedented, especially since Dekalog has had numerous theatrical screenings over the years.

But it's six of one, half a dozen of the other, and a moot point anyway, since they've released at least two collections that, I assume, have never been screened theatrically.

No offense to David Lynch, who I love, but if Fire Walk With Me gets a blu-ray release from Criterion before Le Samouraï, or a much more deserving Lynch offering like The Elephant Man, I'm going to be seriously irked.

I don't like to see Criterion releasing stuff that is already out on Blu-ray while films like Equinox or Fiend Without a Face stagnate on DVD, but I do appreciate the idea that they need some true crowd pleaser titles in order to fund the more obscure stuff that we like.

I never understood the assumption that because they're releasing one thing, it somehow means that it is impacting their ability to release something else. I don't think we have any proof that that has ever happened.

The bolded part just made my head explode.

You're otherwise correct, though. I was mainly using the discussion as an excuse to make another pitch for Blu-rays of Equinox and Fiend Without a Face.

It's probably neither here nor there, but is Fire Walk With Me really considered a crowd-pleaser or even a sure thing in terms of profit? I haven't seen it, but wouldn't this release be somewhat diminished by not being released in tandem with the series?

I wonder if any of the content from 10th disc of the "Entire Mystery" set might be part of this release.

I would rather see Criterion release The Elephant Man, Lost Highway, or Wild at Heart (I missed out on the Twilight Time release). The Elephant Man in particular seems like it would be in Criterion's wheelhouse. The version of Fire Walk with Me in the Twin Peaks box set is more than fine.

I still need to see The Elephant Man. My most wanted unreleased Lynch film is Lost Highway. Rented it almost 10 years ago, absolutely fell in love with it and haven't seen it since. I want this film on Criterion blu ray damnit!

I imported the Lost Highway Blu-ray from Japan. That almost guarantees a future Criterion release! I love Lost Highway--not as much as Mulholland Dr., but it's a close second for me.

The title I'm really waiting for Criterion to announce is Roman Holiday. It's a shame it has yet to be released anywhere on Blu-ray.

I read a post just yesterday I believe it was about Roman Holiday. Might have been you but I'm not sure. I haven't seen it yet but I'm going to have to check it out. I think there are some rights issues avoiding this from getting a blu ray currently. I believe that's where I read about this film. In the "Movies that don't have a blu ray yet due to legal rights issues" thread.

I'd be on board with a Wild at Heart release, too. I have a region B locked import, but another domestic issue would be really nice for loaning to friends, watching outside of my bedroom, etc.

What makes it odd is this film is on iTunes. I be interested in what is holding this up. Viacom owns Paramount if I'm correct

A theater in Tucson is showing Fire Walk With Me as a standalone film. Apparently, it's considered a prequel to the TV series. Interesting write-up here:
