The member can be as optimistic as he wants to be. That's okay by me. I'm laughing out loud at the thought of a Criterion edition of Exorcist II!

I can't take anything J. Hoberman says seriously either. He said he regards "Flaming Creatures" as the greatest film ever made. Dude is just trying to be insufferably pretentious with every fiber of his being. Are you that far up your up your own ass that you would really name an experimental film that wasn't even meant to be enjoyable in any traditional sense your favorite film of all-time? Come on, man. Some of these guys approached film criticism with the attitude of, "What will help me gain credibility among my fellow critics, who are also up their own asses?" Fellini, for example, was an experimental filmmaker compared to 99% of other filmmakers, but certain critics want to criticize the guy because he was a skilled enough director that people actually saw his films and enjoyed them. Oh, the horror, Fellini actually had talent instead of some hack from Greenwich Village who made an experimental film where people were running around in the nude without any coherence.

Just blind bought Yhey Live By Night from Amazon for $19.41. Hopefully I like it. Seems like something I would very much enjoy.

Smiles of a Summer Night is probably my favorite Bergman. Mention Bergman and people think serious and depressing, but SoaSM is charming and delightful. Bergman could be quite playful when he wasn't arguing with God.

Yeah, but what other studio would release that?

The same thing can be said about the John Waters films (MM and the future planned releases).

They didn't really "release" A Safe Place though. It was included in a box set for the sake of completion and didn't even merit its own disc in said box set.

On another topic, how would you all rank the Wim Wenders filmography? Heard great things about The American Friend and am interested in seeing that next. I've also seen Wings of Desire and liked it, but am not overly familiar with his other films. What are his other "must see" films?

As others have already stated, Paris, Texas.

I don't think he has a greater film in his impressive catalogue of films than that one.

His Road Trilogy is also worth checking out.

Yeah, Criterion would never handle that film, but it would be perfect for Scream Factory. Besides, Criterion usually doesn't do horror/cult unless it's something they have the rights to through Janus or a smaller distributor. And if they were going for something by John Boorman, they'd get Point Blank or Excalibur.

Criterion doesn't have to release every single film. Kino, Shout, and Arrow do a fine job too.

Paris, Texas, The Shawshank Redemption, and Carlito's Way are the three films that were responsible for turning me into something like a movie buff in my early teens. And as much as I love Paris, Texas, I gotta say I love Wings of Desire more.

I just learned that Tampopo and The Lure will be playing at a local theatre here in September! I was going to blind buy Tampopo at the B&N sale in July, but now I may wait and see it on the big screen first! Just thinking about that film makes me hungry for some real Ramen.

I really don't want Criterion near 'Excalibur' - I want a proper 4K UHD edition that uses the 4K scan which makes the bluray transfer look shoddy

Tonight i hit a Criterion milestone and watched my 300th spine: Shinarbayev's "Revenge" from the World Cinema Project Vol. 2 set! (I wasn't really feeling the movie but hey, 300's a big number!)

Okay, I give up-

Which of these 12 Criterion DVD releases do you feel are unlikely to be upgraded to Blu (by Criterion)?

Vampyr 1932
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse 1933
My Man Godfrey 1936
49th Parallel 1941
Brute Force 1947
Oliver Twist 1948
Stray Dog 1949
Hobson's Choice 1954
Shoot The Piano Player 1960
Onibaba 1964
The Naked Prey 1965
Red Beard 1965

Thank you very much for your input.
