Is Lost in America the first Albert Brooks-directed film to receive the Criterion treatment?

I love all the films he directed from Real Life to The Muse. Haven't seen Looking For Comedy in the Muslim World, but that's his lowest rated film and the only one he didn't write with a partner.

My three favorites are probably Real Life, Lost in America and Defending Your Life.

If you like Albert Brooks, you should watch it. It's a lot funnier than The Muse. The centerpiece sequence of him performing stand-up in India goes on the shortlist of funniest scenes he's ever done, along with the nest egg and the buying exercise attire.

I hope so. I'd rather it go to Criterion than for it to be released by Warner Archive, as the last few releases by them have been barebones, save for a theatrical trailer.

EDIT: Just found out John Heard, who played Tom the bartender, died.

I watched The Killers (1946) and really dug it. It's kind of hard not to get sucked in after that pretty stellar intro of pulpy dialogue in a diner that almost becomes comical. I'm not sure if the rest quite reached that level, to be honest, but the creation of the noir archetype being assembled by perspective and subjectivity was compelling enough. A side note: it struck me here more-so than anything else that Tom Hardy really resembles a young Burt Lancaster. Not in terms of looks, really, but approach and sheer status. I've yet to see a bad performance from him.

Gonna watch the Siegel version, with not very high expectations. One of the extras suggested another Siodamak film that piqued my interest, The Spiral Staircase, which I'm trying to track down.

"Modern Romance" needs the Criterion treatment and hopefully it gets it now that Criterion has a relationship with Brooks. That movie is so damn funny. Probably my favorite Brooks film along with "Lost in America". Also love "Mother", "Defending Your Life" and "Real Life".

The introduction of The Killers is absolutely fantastic.

If you weren't aware, the film is a partial adaptation of Hemingway's short story (the short story ends with the murder of the Swede at the beginning of the film). The rest of the film, the investigation of his death, is original material.

I wasn't aware prior to the viewing. And yeah, that intro is what will keep bringing me back. Have you seen the Siegel version?

Yeah I'm hoping Criterion gets it as well. This has been one great year for catalog releases. One after another of titles I've been waiting for years on.

Oh man that sucks

Yeah, I didn't care for it.

I wouldn't even consider myself a huge fan of the 1940s version, but I do love the introduction more than most film-noir movies in general.

I enjoy the Siegel version. Marvin and Clu Gulager are both excellent in it as is Angie Dickinson, who I rank among the most beautiful actresses of all-time. She, Jacqueline Bisset, and Raquel Welch are just impossibly amazing women from this era. Reagan is alright, definitely could have had a better actor in that role, and that has nothing to with his political career. He was just a subpar actor who did a satisfactory job in this role, but that role should have been played by an actor with more presence. It's a good film, but not at the same level as the '46 film IMO. It makes a nice companion piece to the '46 film, but the '46 version is the main course.

Having never seen a Tarkovsky film... Now seems the perfect time at $20. Would Stalker or Solaris be the better first film?

As long as the Criterion sale is going on, I'm going to throw a huge recommendation behind "Breaker Morant" which I watched again recently. What a magnificent film. The performances are uniformly incredible as well as the writing and direction. I won't spoil the plot because it helps going into it blind. I haven't seen it talked about much in this thread, but I'd highly recommend purchasing it during the B&N sale.
