If there's any criticism to be directed towards Being There, it's the end credits.

What's wrong with end credits? Blurry? in some unknown language? or there was none?

It features behind the scenes outtakes if I recall correctly.

But if I have one very mild criticism, it's that Peter Sellers' performance, as fantastic as it is, is just a little one-note. Over the course of a 2+ hour movie it starts to lose its potency towards the latter half.

...at least it did for me.

It was definitely the point. Apart from the fact that he's supposed to have some sort of autism in which case there isn't much elbow room for emotional development, it's the reaction of the other characters to him throughout the film that makes it work so he needs to remain "one-note".

Indeed, and it's a colossal misstep. It totally ruins the lingering effects of that final shot.

Peter Sellers was nominated for the Oscar for Best Actor. Some said the reason Sellers lost was because of the outtakes at the very end of the movie as the credits are rolling. Sellers himself later said the outtakes "broke the spell" of the movie.

To be fair, I'm sure plenty of people are currently more than satisfied with the current Criterion editions of films like Belle de Jour, M, and The 400 Blows, even if superior sources have subsequently surfaced, although in the case of The 400 Blows I'm not sure they have. I have yet to hear of 'Blows' getting the 4K treatment.
Since the 4K scans are primarily made to create DCP's for theatrical screenings, you might as well take that 4K master and use it for a BD release, right? You're right that there is an element of hype concerning 4K scans for BD releases but it's also a bit of a "quality stamp." It's unlikely to get much better than a 4K scan (at least for BD's, UHD BD may be another story), so as long as the encoding process isn't messed up, there's a good chance that a 4K scan is the ultimate release for a blu-ray title in terms of PQ.

I was looking at 75" 4K LCD screens while at Costco the other day. Monstrous sizes, but the prices weren't ludicrous ($2,500-$3,000) all things considered. If the trend towards ever bigger screens continue, 4K vs. 2K scans may end up having a noticeable difference when viewed on such big screens.

I think the little smilie in his post indicated he knew what was wrong with them.

I agree that it not only ruins the effect of the movie, but even more importantly considering that the outtakes consist of Sellers flubbing a line that didn't make it to the final cut of the film, it makes it seem like Sellers was not competent enough to complete the scene because he kept corpsing. Knowing that Sellers prided himself on not "having a personality of his own", it would have especially irked him to show him breaking character like that.

I saw it years ago. I recall thinking it was good, but I felt the same thing. For me, it wasn't so much that Sellers grew stale. It was that the reactions to him grew stale and less amusing. That, to me, is where the "one-note" comes in.

regarding UHD... I don't get some of the posts made here. film enthusiasts salivate over the opportunity to see something in 70 mm, if available, but are "content enough" with what they've got when it comes to home viewing.

32" used to be a pretty big screen television. now 47" is considered small to mid-size. do you folks mean to tell me that if you had the space, you wouldn't like to have one of those 75 inch plus Samsung UHD TVs? when the screen gets that big, you really start seeing the benefits of UHD. no offense directed at the other poster, but the vividness on the showroom floor is just retail marketing nonsense. the LG OLED produces the most theater like image I've ever seen on a home television.

I want the biggest screen I can house and afford and I want it to be as close to theater like as possible. ..and that isn't to say that some don't Blu-rays look stunning.

The character was meant to be "one note" because of the lack of interactions with humans and situations.
However, my guess is you're saying it was a little too one dimensional for you.
Worked for me.

Last time I watched this I realized it was a lot like The Enigma Of Kasper Hauser which I assume came first.

***End SPOILER**

I love the film but my criticism would be the ending.
Having him walk on water was silly and imo gimmicky...it didn't fit the rest of the film.
I would have found the ending more powerful with him nurturing the little tree.
It's what he knows.

Well since I live in a tiny Parisian apartment I don't exactly have the space for a 75 inch screen right now. But I see your point.

Would I need to do this for The Exorcist too?

I believe that Peter Sellers's performance does reach a second note. It occurs right after
[Show spoiler]Ben Rand dies. Chance has an epiphany as he looks at his friend's dead body and connects this death with the death of the "old man." Dr. Allenby, who has been slowly piecing together the enigma of Chauncey Gardner, gently interrogates him and discovers the truth. Chance's responses to the questions are on a completely different level than any of his spoken words were communicated at any time of the rest of the film.

No one has seen all the classics.

And you put "END SPOILERS" immediately before the spoilers in your original post. To hide spoilers just put
Hide this text
around the text you want to hide.

Thanks to the sales extension, the good folk in the coupon thread and an awesome store manager I was able to pick up a newly-minted The Breaking Point for a cool $12.99 + tax. Can't wait to give this bad boy a spin.
