Well, in fairness, this all came up because one of the posters here just watched it for the first time. There are many classic films out there that haven't seeped into the public consciousness.

I want the biggest screen I can house and afford and I want it to be as close to theater like as possible. ..and that isn't to say that some don't Blu-rays look stunning.
Not gonna take the bait here in this thread, but there're plenty on the forum where people discuss/explain their views on UHDs.

Completely respect your perspective on this. Perhaps I'm in a minority, but I like the fact that my home viewing is different to that in a cinema. And I'm one of those who "salivates" at seeing a film in 70mm, or a roadshow event like The Hateful Eight, etc.

I have a 40 inch television currently, and could see myself going to 50 inch - but that would be it. I know it sounds paradoxical, but I like the intimacy of "home" theater. The fact that I may never get to see some of my favourite films on the big screen isn't lost on me. But equally, I'm not looking to recreate the effect at home.

Having said all this, I do find the home theater galleries that members post on this site to be fascinating - many of which are huge, and look awesome.

Today's my lucky day. I managed to buy the last copy of the OOP Eric Rohmer Six Moral Tales set at my local B&N. With my membership discount and a 5/50 coupon, I got it for $42 and change.

Just finished watching Black Girl. Though it is a "social message" movie by design, it's artful enough that it doesn't feel like any number of poorly done "message" films you'd find today. The b&w cinematography particularly stands out, as does the no-nonsense editing. With a runtime of only 59 minutes it may sound rather slim, but in truth it does exactly what it sets out to do and gets out before it wears out its welcome. If it were even 15 minutes longer, parts of it might become repetitive, such as Diouana's repeated internal questions. Sembène doesn't beat around the bush here--it's amazing how much ground he manages to cover in such a limited runtime, without it feeling rushed or overstuffed. A great example of true economical filmmaking.

More Ousmane Sembène on BD would be nice.

I decided to buy two films now that the sale was extended. One is The Lodger but I'm debating between Broadcast News and His Girl Friday (both blind-buys) as I want a screwball/romantic comedy. Which one should I get first? Thanks!

Broadcast News is a great film. One of the best of the 80s or any decade for that matter IMO

My favorite screwball comedy is Here Comes Mr. Jordan but His Girl Friday wouldn't garner any complaints from me.

I would never be able to do that.
[Show spoiler]Even if 3 Women Naked were to Tie Me up, Tie Me Down for Two Days, One Night, Mister Johnson would go from Bigger Than Life to The Soft Skin after just 400 Blows.

Default Badlands

Since Badlands was mentioned a bit earlier, and I just watched it this evening, I give you Sissy from the movie:

and from the 'Making of':

(I must have goofed up the color on my iphone edit ;-)
She has aged better than I have.

Per usual with T Malick, the cinematography was beautiful.

Gonna have to disagree with that. Didn't really enjoy broadcast news all that much. Felt pretty by the numbers to me.

But then, I have to admit, romantic comedies usually don't do it for me.

"Broadcast News" hugely improved for me the second time I watched it. The first time I watched it, it seemed like an above average rom-com. Good, but not great. The second time, I really noticed a ton of subtle brilliance packed into it. William Hurt, as usual, gives a masterful performance as the dolt who has everything go his way. Albert Brooks is also terrific and Holly Hunter's wonderful performance really anchors the film. I'm not the biggest James L. Brooks fan, but he knocked it out of the park on this one.

I'm not big on rom coms either but I really enjoyed Broadcast News. Its more of a drama to me than a rom com though. I love the cast and they all give great performances IMO. Like mja345 said it got a lot better for me as well on a second viewing.

Nicely done and you didn't even need to reference a certain Monkees film.

Just saying it's a loaded topic that can create some extremely testy debates. Introducing it here could have this thread way off topic for weeks...although I see that's not necessarily out of the ordinary here.
