Naturally. One never wants to commit too early especially when going in blind. There's always the danger one does not get Head at first. It may take some time.

I think that would depend on which cashier is selling it. I know at my local B&Ns I would not accept Head from any of them even with a discount.

All seriousness aside, I'm glad I got Head with the BBS set, but it's not something I would have paid for as a standalone. However, had The Last Picture Show been available as a standalone, I probably would have bought it and the Sony Easy Rider and not the BBS set. I'm glad I bought the set, though. Both Five Easy Pieces and The King of Marvin Gardens were better than I remembered.

I'm looking for some recommendations Criterions to watch. So far I've seen 12 Angry Men, The 400 Blows, Boyhood, My Beautiful Laundrette, A Night To Remember, Weekend (2011)... I'm actually in the middle of watching Before Sunrise right now... I'll be watching Blue Is The Warmest Color and The Ice Storm, as I ordered those and will be getting them in a few days.

If you're a Star Wars nut like I am, I'd start off with the films of Akira Kurosawa. George Lucas has gone on record that Kurosawa's visual style has heavily influenced him. Specifically, The Hidden Fortress had a big impact on Episode IV. I've not yet seen it (it's on my short list), but I can enthusiastically recommend Seven Samurai as one of the first films you should check out.
If you liked 12 Angry Men, Anatomy of a Murder is a safe bet. I love Otto Preminger and Jimmy Stewart, both. Have you ever seen the work of Ingmar Bergman? If not, check out some of his films. The man was a master, and The Seventh Seal is fantastic! Finally, the first film I ever bought from Criterion, Elia Kazan's On the Waterfront, should be in your collection. Marlon Brando was at the top of his game, and the supporting cast is superb. Brando and Eva Marie Saint took home two of the film's eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Quote:

Aside from works by those directors (and some already mentioned), other highlights for me would be: 8 1/2, The Wages of Fear, Wings of Desire, Breathless, The Rules of the Game, Beauty and the Beast, The Red Shoes, Badlands, The Night of the Hunter, Bicycle Thieves, Brazil...yeah, on and on it goes. |

Kinda sorta Criterion-related, since there are Criterion reviews here in abundance...
Several people in this forum have asked me to start a blog that archives my reviews and my write-ups. I have not done so, because I've always figured that a movie review blog would be too self-indulgent. However... I gave in, and decided to start an account on Letterboxd. Right now, it's mostly reviews of newer films that I saw at the theater, but I've also retroactively added some movie content reviews from my write-ups on this site. I will be slowly adding archived reviews to the site as I stumble across them here. I will probably never be able to list every single movie that I've reviewed on this forum, but this is a start. A Letterboxd account is not as high-maintenance as an actual blog, and it's also easy to add movies, since I don't have to worry about artwork, etc. This will make it easy for me to look up my own past reviews, and that's the main attraction for me. I'll go live with it and add the link to my signature shortly, after I get the feel of the site and straighten out some rough edges. |

That running forum, however, is making it easy for me to add my past reviews to my Letterboxd account, though, because, unlike this site, I don't make references to Blu-ray picture quality and such, and I limit the review passages simply to movie content. |

I think there should be more Scorsese films here. One ain't gonna cut it for the greatest filmmaker alive. I'm thinking of:
• Who's That Knocking at My Door? +various like The Big Shave + Italianamerica • After Hours • Age of Innocence • Kundun Anything else? |
