FYI - I believe the Arrow release of Sisters is region-free and uses Criterion's transfer.

The special edition of Blue is one of my most desired upgrades. Unfortunately, I feel it will never happen.

I just gave up on the special edition ever happening this past sale. Yeah, it's not gonna happen

I didn't think Sisters was region free but I'm gonna check right now. I'm still without a region free player since my last one broke

The other day in the 2001 thread someone asked if WB would ever license 2001 to Criterion for a blu-ray release. I think WB will likely release the film in 2018 for its anniversary but I do not rule out a license to Criterion.

I think we'll see a lot more prestigious classic films go to boutique labels. I'm still surprised Sony licensed On the Waterfront to Criterion. If WB licenses 2001 then anything is possible. It would say a lot about what studios think of physical media.
What happened to that recovered footage that people speculated would be inserted into the film for a longer cut, some years back? Anything come of that?

It isn't region free. The first pressing was, no doubt "accidentally," region free but it is now locked.

If it's any consolation, it's come to the point where I get annoyed watching offliners' televisions because they are, at minimum, much too bright.

It's a pretty good fit for the Nanny society too. The people who go to town clucking their tongues about the ways other people spend their own time and their own money love streaming.

Talk about a target rich environment.

I doubt it. Kubrick was said to have had his assistants destroy any extra footage of his films.

Warner's response was that they were not going to edit it back into "2001". I suppose that holds out hope that it would be included in some way as a bonus feature on a future release, which would be cool. i think that it is the majority of the footage which was cut after the premiere, something like sixteen out of nineteen minutes (I forget the numbers, but that kind of percentage anyway).

I know what you mean. My customized calibration settings on my own television are sort of like the Cinema mode with a few minor tweaks, because Blu-rays and DVDs are the only reason I own a television in the first place.

The default settings on most televisions, however, are more tailored for sports and such.

To my discredit, I actually watched Blu-rays with the default settings on first high definition television for a couple of years before realizing that I could get far better picture by calibrating the set in a way that best suits the viewing of movies. It was a revelation at the time, because I had never noticed that black-and-white films were actually blue-tinted to a barely noticeable extent on the television's standard settings.

Oof. Blue-ray.

At least you fixed it--I'm always perplexed by how passive people are with regard to the display settings. I wish more discs came with rudimentary calibration materials, because I found the ones included on some of Pixar's discs to be very useful.

Even better, players could come with included calibration apps. It would be a nice resource that would make a discernible difference with little effort on the part of the user. Criterion's inclusion of the contrast tools with Eraserhead was a step in the right direction, but I was surprised they didn't carry it over or expand on it for their version of Mulholland Dr.

Hmm, I'm honestly slightly disappointed, just slightly. I was curious. Seeing it as a bonus feature will be nice if it happens. Perhaps it is correct they've been sitting on it for 2018.

It might be interesting if edited footage were included as an extra, but I'm not a fan of changing a film unless it's something the director felt needed to be done. Especially if Mr. Kubrick left instructions that extra footage should be destroyed which in my opinion shows clear intent he didn't want changes made.

Without clear intent from Kubrick that he really preferred a different edit and wanted it changed, leave it the way he left it. Even to the point that if he left the edit to spite the so called "them" who forced a change, it's his work. If you don't like it make your own movie.

Obviously this doesn't apply now, since the home video climate has changed, but it's already in the collection...
