I'm at work so I can't watch it (It's over an hour).

Criterion's Peter Becker was on a show called The Focus Group yesterday:
https://twitter.com/focusgroupradio/...02413753061377

Apparently the word is titles like Le Corbeau, The Silence of the Lambs, etc are coming back in print.

Trailer for Wes Anderson's latest. The Fantastic Mr. Fox fans will most likely be pleased with this.

Been wanting a Bluray of Le Corbeau for ages. One of my favorite films/directors. I hope this news is true. Maybe they can dust off Ran as well and finally release it since Lionsgate/Studiocanal don't seem to care to release a region A version of the recent 4k restoration.

YES!

Le Corbeau is such a deliciously wicked film!

I wish Criterion would focus more effort on Warner's back catalog. Warner (and Warner Archive) are the only other outlets for their huge inventory, and they're simply not working fast enough (and they're side-stepping a lot of important titles). Also, I don't trust Warner to handle titles like PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID, because it's easy to imagine them releasing the newer "restoration" that everyone hates and ignoring the largely superior Turner 1988 cut.

Here are some that deserve the Criterion treatment:
KLUTE
FINGERS
STRAIGHT TIME
BREWSTER McCLOUD
THE TERMINAL MAN (Hey, Kubrick loved it)
SUPER FLY (Criterion could use some color, no?)
O LUCKY MAN! (They did IF... after all)
PRINCE OF THE CITY (Including the long, initial cut as a bonus)
STAR 80

There are many others, but those are my most wanted. Their handling of BADLANDS, LOST IN AMERICA and THE IN-LAWS (among others) was very impressive.

Any other Warner titles I'm missing? What else should Criterion be doing from the Warner vault?

For those interested, here's the bit where Becker talks about these: (quoted so the forum doesn't auto-embed it and ignore the timecode)

It sounds to me like he's saying Silence may be coming back in a physical version, and that Le Corbeau may be coming to streaming, with no indication of a physical version. Where the "etc." comes from I'm not sure. It sounded more like a general "there are definitely movies we used to have the rights to that we don't have anymore but we'd like to again" for the most part.

I think in terms of documentaries, 1990's PARIS IS BURNING definitely deserves the Criterion treatment. If I remember correctly, it was added to the National Film Registry last year. It's a very captivating documentary, and it first showcased vogueing as a style of dance as well as introducing the world to drag ball culture. I think it'd be great for the collection.

The "etc" was listed because I haven't heard the entire show and there could be more. For what it's worth everyone in the SOTL thread is taking it as fact the film will get a new blu-ray. There's a good chance but we'll see.

Ah, thanks for the clarification! I didn't now if someone was putting this together with another source or something. Just figured it was worth pointing out that while, yes, he does stronpgly suggest they would very much like to rerelease it, he didn't quite say "SOTL is coming back into print."

But if SOTL were a title that excited me, I'd probably be taking this as fact too...

Meanwhile I'm just over here refreshing John Cameron Mitchell's phantom page and waiting for the edition of Hedwig & The Angry Inch that I know is coming.

I believe some of those are expected to be coming like Klute, O Lucky Man and Straight Time.

There are definite plans to release SotL and several other OOP titles next year, Becker just didn't want to flat out announce that though, so he framed it with "might" and "may". Reading between the lines it's obvious that there's a number of titles previously OOP that will come back. I know of at least six of them. The same thing happened this year too.

tenia mentioned this at the Criterion forum, but not here, so I'll share. A new restoration of IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE from "Jet Tone Films, The Criterion Collection & Bologna Cinemathèque" is playing at the Lumière Festival in Lyon. I'm surprised that ITMFL is getting out there before CHUNGKING EXPRESS, but there you go.

Yeah, they had the option of releasing SoTL years ago but passed, that's what Becker told me personally anyway. They didn't feel just a PQ upgrade was enough since some of their extras were released on other versions. But now that physical media is straining to hold on, its pretty clear that some companies have changed their approach to how they can sell a title. Good to see.

Six you say. To the best of my knowledge, here are all the non-StudioCanal titles that are OOP:
[Show spoiler]008 - The Killer
009 - Hard Boiled
012 - This is Spinal Tap
013 - The Silence of the Lambs
021 - Dead Ringers
023 - RoboCop
026 - The Long Good Friday
027 - Flesh for Frankenstein
028 - Blood for Dracula
033 - Nanook of the North
055 - The Unbearable Lightness of Being
075 - Chasing Amy
078 - The Bank Dick
079 - W. C. Fields: Six Short Films
083 - The Harder They Come
085 - Pygmalion
107 - Mona Lisa
119 - Withnail & I
120 - How to Get Ahead in Advertising
136 - Spellbound
137 - Notorious
203 - The BRD Trilogy
204 - The Marriage of Maria Braun
205 - Veronika Voss
206 - Lola
369 - Paul Robeson: Portraits of the Artist Box Set
370 - The Emperor Jones & Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist
371 - Body and Soul & Borderline
372 - Sanders of the River & Jericho
373 - The Proud Valley & Native Land
388 - The Two of Us
453 - Chungking Express
463 - Il Generale Della Rovere
488 - Howards End

The Paul Robeson set might be back in print and we can safely eliminate Dead Ringers, Howards End and Il Generale Della Rovere.

So that leaves us with the following possibilities:
008 - The Killer
009 - Hard Boiled
012 - This is Spinal Tap
013 - The Silence of the Lambs
023 - RoboCop
026 - The Long Good Friday
027 - Flesh for Frankenstein
028 - Blood for Dracula
033 - Nanook of the North
055 - The Unbearable Lightness of Being
075 - Chasing Amy
078 - The Bank Dick
079 - W. C. Fields: Six Short Films
083 - The Harder They Come
085 - Pygmalion
107 - Mona Lisa
119 - Withnail & I
120 - How to Get Ahead in Advertising
136 - Spellbound
137 - Notorious
203 - The BRD Trilogy (204 - The Marriage of Maria Braun, 205 - Veronika Voss, 206 - Lola)
388 - The Two of Us
453 - Chungking Express

So, Silence of the Lambs, Spellbound, Notorious, Spinal Tap (probably), ??? and ??? Chunking Express, maybe. Or a couple of the Hanmade Films titles

Here are five that I'd like to see upgraded:

La Strada
Masculin Feminin

Au hasard Balthazar

The main one I can think of off the top of my head that was from their laserdisc collection that I want a blu ray for so bad and wish Criterion didn't lose the rights for is the criminally underrated Dead Presidents.

If we are counting laserdisc titles, "She's Gotta Have It" has been mentioned as in the works, and I think the show is gonna debut next year, so that would fit. I'm pretty sure the unrated director's cut was exclusive to their LD, never released on a DVD.
