That's great, and spoiler tags don't preclude you from getting that information, do they?

I don't want to know that certain directors or films are being definitively added to the collection until Criterion announces them. I'm not alone: this has been discussed at length here.

That's Baumbach in a nutshell. His films are just amiable time killers to me. I don't see greatness in them, but each to their own.

Re: Murnau. I'm curious but his films already have quality blu ray releases.for the most part.

I keep thinking my revisit of The Dekalog can't get any better (this transfer makes it an entirely different experience), then I get to Ep. 6 (aka A Short Film About Love) and am stunned at what Kieslowski consistently manages to achieve here. That episode in particular is kind of perfect.

It's definitely unlikely, but at the same time, nobody else has released the director's cut. I don't think the Criterion extras are available either. With "The Rock", all of the Criterion extras are on the current non-Criterion blu. With some of the announcements of the last few months, it's hard to write anything off completely.

Hmmmm, on the Kent Jones page.

I can't really see it being Hitchcock/Truffaut. . .

He did write Jimmy P, which could be a possibility?

There's also that Lewton doc. . . maybe that'll be a special feature on another Lewton film, hopefully?

Kent Jones moderates a discussion between Linklater, Hawke and Delpy in one of The Before Trilogy extras, so it’s probably for that.

Noah Baumbach is trying to be the next Woody Allen...at least he's channeling him. But he's consistently releasing New York-centric films which I find quite good. Those people in this forum who are NYC dwellers prob. appreciate what he's doing, so to each their own.

Kent Jones moderates a slew of panels and discussions, a good deal of which are already in the Collection.

If it's for the Val Lewton doc, I hope that's for I Walked with a Zombie. Next year is the film's 75th anniversary.

"Trying" key word. & he may be channeling him but the best Baumbach film still isn't better than any of Allen's worst films. He makes the type of films I've watched on a plane for free and have shut off. That's how bad they are IMHO. Still love that De Palma Doc tho.

Maybe Baumbach hasn't peaked yet. His best film has still yet to be directed.

Apparently not so horrifying to the 30+ critics on rotten tomatoes who have contributed to her film receiving unanimous (yes, I said unanimous) critical acclaim.

I realize this all boils down to the subjective experience, but good god no. Allen's bottom of the barrel films have very little, if anything, to offer, and their only function is that they invariably remind one of what great Allen looks and sounds like. The best of Baumbach, at the very least, offers a perspective and voice that feels personal.

Because critical acclaim means it's good right? Titanic is at 88%

Critics for the most part always do nothing other than help out the marketing of a film.

I'd say that is a big part of the problem, especially considerable how middling Allen can be, but each to their own.

Anyway, it's all about Young Mr.Lincoln for me right now. January can't come soon enough!

Genius. Brilliant.

The studios paid critics to demolish every single Michael Bay or M. Night Shyamalan movie because "marketing". Reverse psychology, amirite?

Or does your little theory apply only to positively-reviewed movies?

Yet still, I've seen better films from Shyamalan & Bay then anything I've seen from Baumbach.

I don't pay attention to critics or awards for the most part because I like to think for myself. Just cause something won an award or a respected critic says it's "Good" doesn't necessarily mean it's good & everyone should like it. Same goes for terribly reviewed films, doesn't mean they're all bad. Child's Play 3 is at 23%, that's one of my fav. horror sequels of all time.

Head's up: Fandor has The Best of Youth available to stream for the next nine days.

I don't think any streaming service has had it for at least a couple years.

I think Squid and the Whale is an excellent film - probably his best film, and that's primarily because of the great performance by Jeff Daniels. His character, a pompous but unsuccessful literary novelist, steals every scene he's in. It's one of the funniest, most well-written characters I've ever seen - and the character isn't over-the-top or too broad. I think in general Baumbach is a lot like Woody Allen without Allen's tendency to indulge in broad, slapsticky bits of humor at times.
