Sheesh. I'd rather they release one of the Universal titles, since that's probably the only way that they'll ever get released. Winchester '73 is a stone cold classic. The Naked Spur could always get a WAC release.

Casablanca returns to theaters for two days only!

Just wanted to give everybody a heads-up: Turner Classic Movies, as part of its "Big Screen Classics" series, is celebrating the upcoming 75th anniversary of Michael Curtiz' iconic film Casablanca by showing the movie in select theaters for two days only, Sunday November 12th and Wednesday November 15th. I assume that all theaters will have the same two showings per day, at 2 PM and 7 PM.

TCM has partnered with Fathom Events. You can find a theater in your area here.

I caught part of Jubal on TV and it was enough to make me buy it, which I did this last sale. I also bought 3:10 to Yuma and thought that was really good, too.

The Hellman films are the only CC Blu-ray Westerns that I haven't seen... well, and Jubal, too, which I'll remedy shortly.

Since this is, of course, a Criterion discussion, and I brought up the 75th Anniversary of Casablanca, I'm curious how many of you all go back to the laserdisc days?

Who here has this beauty:

I'm super stoked. This is my favorite film, and I've never seen it on the big screen. I'm waiting to see if any of my friends will be able to join me; if not, I'll catch it Wednesday afternoon with a big tub of popcorn and the biggest Coke this side of Dallas.

I remember the first time I saw Casablanca on the big screen. It was just a college screening in the student union, but it had so much more impact than my previous viewings on television. There's something about sharing the experience in public with strangers that makes it different. When they turned up the lights and I walked back to my dorm room, I felt like I was Bogart and I was ready to sacrifice the woman I loved for a cause I believed in. Except, of course, I didn't have either at the time.

Just watched Lady Snowblood for the first time. Blind bought it at the B&N sale. Holy freaking crap was is good. It’s been a long while since I enjoyed a movie that much. Very excited to watch part 2 tomorrow. Anyone have any suggestions on other films that are in the same vein? I honestly don’t know much about Japanese cinema.

If you liked that then you should seek out the Female Prisoner Scorpion series, she's amazing in that.

I just watched Criterion's release of Lone Wolf and Cub earlier this year - I've seen more than my share of 70s Japanese films, but this was a gaping hole and is now my favorite series from the period/genre. Highly recommended.

That book sounds awesome, but I'm gonna hold out for the Criterion, I'm sure it will be loaded with features and it's own booklet.

Here's hoping for several upgrades then. I'm looking at you The Virgin Spring, The Faith Trilogy, and Sawdust and Tinsel. And hopefully we'll be getting those other MGM titles, too.

I've moved across country to another state, selling one house and closing on another. This year's Criterion sales have been the last thing on my mind. Although every time I visit this site, Barry Lyndon, Twin Peaks, and other awesome stuff keeps beckoning me like sirens.

I googled the local B&N sale and decided to swing by and see what looks good. Was hoping to find Persona, since it ranked on the latest and greatest Blu-Ray.com community poll. It wasn't there. But I was floored by the store's selection. I wound up combing through and picking up one title after another. Next thing you know...

Came out to about $300 worth of films. So happy to find so many I wanted, and many more blind buys to explore. And yet, buying this many while I'm still homeless makes me feel so naughty.

...I'll be back next week for Le Samourai.

Owl beat me to the punch. They are indeed different and possibly eerie. I'm usually pretty good at comparisons, but these films are a breed of their own. They're spare, earthy, and almost feel like a bad trip.

I've been meaning to revisit them lately. Maybe I will do so on the same weekend I finally get to that Two Lane Blacktop Commentary.

I'd assume Bill Morrison is for an extra on a silent film, since his latest already got a well-reviewed release by Kino... Seems unlikely they're doing a collection of his own work, though I'd definitely check out a Decasia and other works blu.

And it looks like Poitras's latest doc, Risk, is unreleased on home video yet, but that seems like an odd choice for Criterion...

The Stunt Man is the Rush title that most fits with their library but the current blu-ray is loaded so I don't know why Criterion would pick that to release.

Getting Straight is a Columbia film so I would be surprised it is that. I am hoping that Indicator releases it.

Maybe it is for one of his exploitation films such as Hell's Angels on Wheels or Psych-Out although both of those are out already on Blu-ray. The Savage Seven is a good biker film....ummm maybe Criterion is thinking of doing a biker boxset

"Color of Night" would be perfect for Criterion.

Speaking of early 70s Elliott Gould films, "Little Murders" badly needs a release.
