No prob. Honestly, Maya Deren really does deserve to have all her films(and not just two) released on blu-ray.

Is the equipment (TV, projector, screen, blu-ray player, etc.) used by Dr. Svet Atanasov or any of the other reviewers listed anywhere?

As with music review websites, it would be helpful to know what equipment reviewers are using in making their determinations.

Svet is such an elite reviewer and wordsmith I'd gladly give him anything he wanted if I was Criterion.

Plus, dvdbeaver doesn't exactly put much effort at all into their reviews. Their movie section is often a copy/paste of a review from somewhere else, and they mention a sentence or two about the PQ/AQ and fill the rest with specs, and screenshots. You can easily churn those out. Say what you will about reviews here, but they do at least go into more detail in each section.

Also I'm pretty sure Gary Tooze has the word "Robust" as a hotkey on his keyboard.

Reminds me of reading Peter Travers' movie reviews. You could take about a dozen random reviews of his and take a shot for every review that has the word "bracing" in it. I promise you'll be wasted by the time you're finished reading them all.

Just rewatched Barry Lyndon for the first time in years.

I didn't care for it on my first viewing, finding it dragged out and boring. I guess a large part of my criticism stems from my disinterest in historical, epiclike films. However, on this rewatch I was immersed from the first frame. It's a really powerful film about one man's morals and how far he'll go to get what he wants.

What struck me most during this viewing is how immature Lyndon is. From the start to the end, he is very childlike and essentially stomps his feet and throws a temper tantrum whenever things don't go his way. His cousin Nora said it perfect: "Besides, Redmond, Captain Quin is a man, and you're only a boy and haven't a guinea in the world."

I'll more than likely purchase the Criterion Blu-ray sometime this week.

Even though this isn't my personal favorite Kubrick film, this may honestly be his best film, especially in terms of direction and cinematography. As of right now, I believe my Kubrick ranking is the following (the first six are definite).

1. Eyes Wide Shut
2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
3. The Shining
4. Barry Lyndon
5. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
6. Full Metal Jacket

7. Paths of Glory (rewatch needed)
8. The Killing (rewatch needed)
9. A Clockwork Orange (rewatch needed)
10. Lolita (rewatch needed)
11. Killer's Kiss (rewatch needed)
12. Fear and Desire

Still haven't seen Spartacus despite having it recorded on my DVR.

I do find Kubrick's films more than many others to get better with repeat viewings. He puts a lot of ideas and fine details in them, that it's hard to really notice and/or appreciate it fullythe first or second time you're seeing it.

Wow! I just finished watching Ingrid Bergman in Roberto Rossellini’s Europe ‘51 on Filmstruck! That film definitely needs and deserves a stand-alone release!

I too watched Barry Lyndon over the weekend, the Criterion blu-ray actually. It's been about a year since I watched the movie last. Kubrick, his film, and the Criterion disc are all beautiful.

I rank Kubrick's films like this, I think:

1. 2001
2. The Shining
3. The Killing
4. Eyes Wide Shut
5. Lolita
6. Dr. Strangelove
7. Paths of Glory
8. Barry Lyndon
9. A Clockwork Orange
10. Full Metal Jacket
11. Killer's Kiss

I haven't seen Fear and Desire or Spartacus, I blame Kubrick. However, I did just recently pick up Spartacus. I'll watch it sometime, Kirk Douglas is a stud afterall.

Barry Lyndon is such an underrated film I believe.

One cannot be a fan of Stanley Kubrick without being a fan of Barry Lyndon.

No doubt Kubrick was at the top of his game by the mid 1970s, esp. with the lens choices he was innovating with the Mitchell BNC Camera he modified along with the NASA Zeiss lenses he adopted. He was using SUPER FAST 0.7f aperture to capture the candle-lit scenes! What an astounding genius.

The three films set is really worth the money, especially when you consider all the extras. I disagree that it needs an individual release, but respect your opinion.

Scottie, you've got to watch Paths of Glory again, and soon. Such a powerful film, and Kirk Douglas is incredible.

I saw Spartacus for the first time about two months ago (at least, I saw the whole thing in one sitting for the first time; I'd seen it in parts). The remaster is wonderful. It's shocking how beautiful the film looks now. That's one to put on your Christmas wish list. You won't regret it.

I completely agree that Kubrick's films get better with repeat viewings.

I'll be the first to say that you could probably make a drinking game out of reading my own movie reviews.

You have to drink a shot every time you see, “effectively”, “...by today's standards”, ”eye candy”, and ”despite the above-mentioned shortcomings.”

I have a drinking game in my Maths class. (Although I can't legally drink yet!)

Every time the teacher says "Stop the Chat!" or "Have a lovely day!", take a shot.

However, if she says this entire phrase, and yes, she does say this often-

"If you are speaking, you are saying to me-'Miss, I have finished my work, can I have some more work to do?', and I will say 'Of COURSE you can!"

DRINK THE WHOLE BOTTLE.

Even though he may not always get it right, I'm happy to give Gary a pass simply because he is first and foremost a huge fan of cinema, because his is a labour of love, and because I have learned so much from his site.

I know others have a much more subjective and forensic interest in the minutiae of PQ and all that, and good for them. I just enjoy his enthusiastic style, which I find complements the more "detailed" reviews here and elsewhere nicely.
