I placed a B&N order just before Christmas and my copy of Le Samourai had a crack in the case (maybe shouldn't have said what I did about it being over-rated. ), so I'll take it back to the store. I don't know what kind of nonsense they told you about not being able to exchange City Lights at the brick and mortar. A cracked case happens, but whatever they sent you is actually pretty negligent. Don't stress about it, though. Take it to the b&m B&N... they'll do the right thing.

The page on Janus' site simply details the narratives of the individual films; there's no information, as of yet, about the restorations, or how long the retrospective will tour the states. Thanks to iScottie for bringing this to everybody's attention this past Wednesday.

Interestingly, the announcement posted to Reddit states that there are over thirty films restored, with the series debuting at the New York Film Forum on February 7th.

I've not yet seen anything about a Criterion release. The smart bet would be that it happens eventually, but when that might occur would be pure speculation at this point.

Merry Christmas to you, Anthony!
Thanks for all the info! As you can see, I'm not the only one you've pleased with this fantastic bit of news. 30+ Bergman film boxset, including the previously MGM released Hour of the Wolf, Shame, etc? YES, I'll TAKE IT!

Excellent movie and I personally don't know if I've ever seen Marilyn prettier than she is here. That intro shot of her.....Wow! Uncle Lon says it best: "Some sweet kid."

[Show spoiler]
Had this happen with a copy of L'Avventura that I bought from B&N last year, ended up going into one of their stores to exchange it.
Had to argue with the worker to get it exchanged because they claimed they "can't see any difference" between the one in the dvd case with artwork the clearly doesn't fit, and the brand new one I had picked off of their shelf which was in the proper case.

Criterion released Barry Lyndon which is a WB title. Unless there were special circumstances regarding that release. It could be possible WB might do something else

Yes, I know. The point I was making was that a release from either Eureka or Arrow is never going to happen. I was surprised that Criterion didn't release it in the UK, as it fits in with the WB titles they have released in the UK.

So episodes 12-20 are just nonsense? I can skip that many and still be ok with following along lol I had heard season 2 is bad but I wouldnt have guessed that bad haha

Yeah... it's pretty damn close. Lynch was taken out of the picture and, from what I've read, threw his hands up over the whole thing, only returning to wrap up the season—and boy is it a wrap-up. While there are some plot lines in those episodes that are interesting/not terrible (though pretty much everyone has opinions on which is in which category), the bad ones are definitely numerous, and more memorably awful than the good ones are memorably good. They also have little to no bearing on FWwM or Season 3.

But yes, the bad is bad enough that I'd say they're for committed fans only. You'll want to read episode summaries somewhere before jumping from 10 or 11 to 20, since there are a handful of new characters in the final episodes, but I don't think it's necessary to watch them.

Yep.

Some of those episodes are ... I'm not sure there are words to describe just how bad they are. I'm not even sure what they were going for. That's what I've always wondered.

Yes. Utter trash. It's like they think they can just emulate Lynch's weirdness without having substance to back it up. Huge dip in quality. Thank goodness Lynch swooped back in to save the series.

Trying to figure out what to order. Hmm.

I know there are things I want, and things I don't have. But what to get? This is a very difficult decision.

EDIT: By the way, has anyone seen The Kid With a Bike?

Yeah, it's an excellent film, as is La Promesse. The only reason I don't buy Dardenne bros films is that I don't find them inviting for re-watches. Not a big fan of the neo-realist style as entertainment.

The difference in quality is not as big as the internet hive mind would have you believe.

No. Thou shalt not skip any episodes when viewing the original Twin Peaks series for the first time. Even the less-than-stellar ones in the middle of Season Two are wildly fun in their special way.

Incidentally, I'm seven episodes into the new season three of Twin Peaks right now, and I'm loving it. David Lynch's endearing brand of "WTF?" is still intact, but he can ramp up the momentum during intense scenes like few other directors can. I'm having a blast with all of the actor cameos in this season from the likes of Naomi Watts, Robert Forster, Laura Dern, Caleb Landry Jones, Matthew Lillard, and Amanda Seyfried.

Gotcha.

Actually, I find their films quite reliable. But that is me. I'm a weirdo.

They are reliable but consistently unremarkable. There is nothing special about what they do in my view. Just very basic film making that's neither particularly intelligent or ambitious.

Each to their own, but they are too safe and middle of the road for me to buy into the hype.

Revisited Blast Of Silence this Xmas and it has lost none of its hardboiled charm. From Lionel Stander’s unforgettable gravelly voiceover complete with pulpy gems like “A killer who doesn't kill gets killed” & “A second string syndicate boss with too much ambition and a mustache to hide the fact he has lips like a woman" to some lovely on-location NYC photography, punctuated by a languid jazz score - its a blast of noirgasmic awesomeness. Blast of Silence might lack the uber coolness of Le Samouraï or the batshit idiosyncratic surrealism of Branded to Kill but more than makes up for it through its gritty quasi-documentary storytelling and a series brutal set pieces. ‘Baby Boy’ Frankie Bono desperately needs to be on Blu and soon.

S3 E8
S3 E18
Missing Pieces
S2 Episodes 8-14
FWWM
Rest of S2
