Just revisited the modern classic A Simple Plan tonight. Incredible film but the DVD is really showing its age.

What are the chances that Criterion can get their mitts on this one? It's too good a movie to just languish away in OOP hell, and a spiffy new release would be timely given Paxton's recent death (RIP).

Was able to pick up The Breakfast Club at Barnes & Noble today for a pretty solid price. It’s 30% off currently since it’s a new release, then 10% from my membership, and they also have a coupon on their website now that works in stores for 15% off which made it right at $20 before tax. I think this is the cheapest it’s been so far. It’s a great set. Highly recommend.

It's a holiday today, so I'd be kinda shocked if there were.

Last year, they announced titles on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, so likely the same this year.

Was $18 and change at Walmart.com a while back. That’s where I got it from. Release is incredible though. Worth it much more than 18 or 20.

Sigh. Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries died today at the age of 46. She's responsible, in a way, for one of my favorite moments in cinema (plus 'Everybody Else...' is a great album.) RIP.

Has anyone seen In Vanda's Room, or any other Pedro Costa films?

I noticed TCM is showing it in a few weeks and I'm not sure if I should record it.

Vanda is my favorite Costa film aside from his Straub/Huillet documentary -- harrowing, not a pleasant movie, but in some ways beautiful. Give it a chance.

Yes! The set Criterion released is amazing. 'In Vanda's Room' is an extremely compelling character study of a heroin addict. Certain scenes almost make you want to look away but you can't. This is a very slow moving film & almost 3 hours long if I remember correctly. Costa rarely moves his camera, the film takes patience, but if you stick with its vision, you'll be greatly rewarded.

Then move onto 'Colossal Youth' & 'Horse Money,' his best film IMO.

I hope with "likely" you mean the next business day, and not the 17th!

edit: is 16th a holiday too?

Exactly, iScottie.

I've found that they often not only don't post on a holiday, but also the day after a holiday. It could even be Wednesday.

We'll see....

It could even be Thursday.

Knowing Criterion, they need a recovery from the recovery day (aka any excuse to postpone announcements further).

Colossal is his best imo, but you can't go wrong from 2000 onwards.

Costa is on a whole different level to most film makers. I.just laughed my head off when some 'respected' lists put Boyhood ahead of Horse Money. Boyhood is a compressed TV pilot. Horse is pure cinema.

His debut Blood is worth a look too. Casa De Lava and Ossos are highly rated by some, but to me they are simply transitional works. Very good, but not essential, unless you really want to get a sense of his career arc.

I love the new stuff. But they have a lot of old DVD only releases that need to be upgraded. Also as a Hitchcock fan, they need to get their hands on the 3 British Laserdisc films they released that I’m fairly sure no other studio is interested in and get them to Blu Ray also. Sabotage, Secret Agent, and Young and Innocent. IMO
