Never thought I'd see the day of a Criterion release of The Awful Truth. I say bring on some more Cary Grant movies. Specifically Arsenic and Old Lace.
Ever since Cat People I've been hoping to see more Val Lewton movies in the collection as well. |

Need to watch some Cary Grant today, in honor of his 114th b-day.
His Girl Friday in a few minutes. |

Great poster! I completely forgot that Marilyn Monroe was the star of The Asphalt Jungle
![]() Seriously, Clash by Night and Don't Bother to Knock would also be welcome additions to my Criterion Collection collection. I'd also gladly double-dip for a CC release of Some Like it Hot. |

Thanks, I had forgotten that announcement. I kind of put TT announcements in the back of my mind these days, knowing that it will be at least 6 months to a year before there's an acceptable (for me) price drop.

CC related because of Nicholson in a Western (Monte Hellman) and because of its similarity to Heaven's Gate...
I saw Missouri Breaks the other night and it was what I hoped it would be: a flawed, odd, and endearing film that can be classified as another "anti-western." It bears similarities w/ Heaven's Gate in it's story about the "have's," the capitalists, taking no s**t from the "have nots," in this case, the cattle rustlers. Just like HG, there are times during the film in which you really feel like you're watching something great. Those moments may be sporadic, but I felt they made the film very worthwhile. I don't know what to make of Brando's performance. I thought Nicholson was better in the film. It's interesting to see Brando work w/ the variety of different actors and actresses who share screen time w/ him. It's pretty clear that Nicholson was capable of working off of whatever eccentricity Brando could come up with, while others were certainly not. It fizzles a little bit towards the end and some plot lines feel a little bit under-developed. Overall, however, I like films that give you a lot to chew on - a lot to talk about, and this is that kind of film. The Blu-ray could use a better transfer. It'd be a neat film for CC to add to their library. I don't know how that works with the distribution rights, if Kino would relinquish them or if CC would be interested. |

I'm not usually inclined to say things like 'they make 'em like that anymore' but if I were... But also yeah to The Asphalt Jungle. Glam Marilyn is awesome but 'plain' Marilyn is pretty freaking awesome too I certainly couldn't argue with anybody who gives an edge to that look. |

I LOVE this movie. I had heard so many bad things I didn't see it until buying the DVD used for cheap one day. Marlon Brando was a mad genius. In the book "Somebody" he told friends toward the end of his life that he had spent his entire life "trying to be less crazy". In this movie he kind of loses the battle, between changing his accent in every scene to the costume choices he makes, his performance is unique to say the least. Another quote from the author of the book that I completely agree with is that in many cases, especially with his flops, Marlon Brando's performances were more interesting and captivating than the movies themselves. I would love a Criterion edition of this. I bought the blu ray and you are right, there is a lot of room for improvement, not to mention it is barebones with just the trailer.... |
