I don't think you need to read the writer's work, but definitely read about him. Some things in the film Mishima would have made more sense to me had I known more about the man Mishima.

No need to wait for blu. It already has a Region A release.

Just picked up A Poem is a Naked Person for pretty cheap on eBay. Couldn’t find a review anywhere, but I’m a Leon Russell fan. Anyone seen it? Solid, or a stinker?

I'm not really a fan of Les Blank and I wasn't too familiar with Leon Russell before seeing it, but I found it to be interesting enough.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I think this is one of Les Blank's best works. There's a review at dvdbeaver: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film5/blu-r...on_blu-ray.htm

Would you guys like me to expand the OP of this thread to include all of the Eclipse DVDs?

What about the non-Eclipse titles only available on DVD and split by in-print and OOP?

I really wish StudioCanal would make the conscious decision to relicense their films to Criterion.

It's a shame that so many films are unavailable on the home video market due to one studio's failure to release them.

I've read Mishima's work, and I feel strangely that the type of people who'd appreciate him as a writer wouldn't find the film very interesting. Mishima was very oxymoronic in the sense that he wrote deeply but lived rather shallow. His public and private life were both very unimpressive apart from his shamelessly flamboyant attempts to make himself relevant to the times even though his ideas were anything but contemporary, basically a weird mix of ahead of his time and hopelessly outdated. The film captures this very well, but it elevates his life to almost mythic proportions, depicting mostly how he saw himself rather than what he actually was, which is really the only way his own life could catch up to the scope of his literature. In a way, the art exceeded the artist quite greatly.

Something irrelevant to this, but worth noting is how Murakami today is the opposite of this in the sense that he become a phenomenon based on how interesting he is as a guy in real life, but most of his literature actually doesn't live up to the hype. A polar opposite case of an artist exceeding his art.

I've never seen it, but it looks like a film I would blind buy in a heartbeat as a huge Fellini fan.
