I would say that for a lot of people, Solondz's work reflects a realistic depiction of the life of the outsider in our society. His characters are not so much good and bad as they are just sad people trying to find love and acceptance in this ridiculous world. I think a lot of people may find him off putting because he may reflect a bit too accurately the ugliness, ignorance, and desperation that surrounds and affects us all.

Not trying to be overly dramatic, however IMHO Solondz is vastly underappreciated and rarely gets any love. I would rank him in the top ten of writer/director/auteurs, although I might be in the minority.

Huge fan of this gentleman's work. I wish more of his films were available on Blu Ray.
I'm hoping Criterion will get the licensing to release Welcome to the Dollhouse and Happiness. Happiness distributor is Lionsgate, who seemed very reluctant to release the title on Blu-Ray out of fear for the controversial Dylan Baker subplot. Criterion releasing the film in the light of the #metoo movement will sparked a few think pieces condemning Criterion for bothering with this film, they secretly endorsed pedophilia. It's bizarre Criterion got the rights to the spiritual sequel to Happiness(Life During Wartime) but don't have the rights to one of the 1990's indie classics.

"Happiness" is a masterpiece and I find it deeply hilarious at times.

The constant Wes Anderson bashing has become more tiresome than people asking when Grand Budapest is coming out. Fact.

same goes for films with subtitles. It's as if their brain is so small that they can't take it all in

Only watch it if it's dubbed!

Oh, they do. No need to remind me. How anyone could defend the excess of "I'm the director and I need the actresses to lapdance me and I'll give them a 30 minute scene of talking that goes nowhere and will let them beat up Kurt Russell" 'Deathproof is beyond me.

True. But i've been able to convert some good ol' boys down South with Stephen Show and Park Chan-wook films.

Believe it or not it's not a lost cause. That's bull crap lazy producers in Hollywood bring up as fake statistics.

I've always found Anderson and Tarantino fans curious people and kind of the same ilk (and unable to take any criticism).

Yeah. I can see that. Luckily I got to hang out with people from other eras who turned me on the art of their day and provided context for such.

I find it funny how the people that hate him the most are also the people that talk about him the most.

Who hates him? Seen a few posters talking about issues with his approach. Haven't seen anyone straight bashing the dude though. Or in your words, "hate him".

I do see some over reaction from some fans though...

Okay, the people that have problems with his films are the ones that seem to discuss him the most. While his fans are the "annoying" ones.

I kinda like the guy. Just not always , all the time. He's not above criticism. I can't speak for anyone, but he's not by any means bad. He just gets tiresome sometimes.

I personally find the blind defense of him and Tarantino annoying though. Yes.

I'm not gonna lie: at least 15 of my favorite films are on that list. And at least 10 films I loathe are also there. I have no idea what that says about my taste in film.

I think both Wes and Tarantino are filmmakers that a lot of people (including myself) kind of of grow out of as they get older. I mean, I still like both quite a bit... but they're definitely guys that are easy to love when you're young and just getting into film... and that love fades over time.

I just feel like there's the same discussion on here about the merits of one of (or both of) them as filmmakers every few weeks.

I see your point and can see the validity of it. I suppose I can also see how their detractors may discuss them too much. But, to be fair, they are very active and any one striking their own path in the industry has to deal with their fan boys in both the internet and press.

Now that can get VERY tiresome.

I'm also not sure how highly I'd rate filmmakers that can be "grown out of". I'm no SW fan, but people who grow into adults still love Star Wars. Lasting power is something worth considering in this pantheon. Kurosawa, Wilder, Capra, Hitchcock and a host of other directors have it.

I meant "grow out of" more along the lines of someone saying "I thought Reservoir Dogs was a total masterpiece when I was 15, now I'm 25 and and think it's an 8/10 tops."

No one really talks like that, but you get my point.
