I actually own most of the above and I would be very interested to hear if these had come up, specifically Armageddon and The Rock?
I'm curious how these are questionable.

It needs a blu-ray badly and been one of my favorite animated films since i was 12 for 25 years since i saw it on Cinemax with Heavy Metal, Hey Good Lookin' and Vampire Hunter D which became favorites of mine.

This would be an awesome Criterion release (I've actually been looking to see if it ever popped up on Shouts! radar). I have a very similar experience were I remember watching it in the middle of the night on premium cable after "Wizards" when I was in middle school. It took me almost 10 years to find the movie (couldn't remember the name) again, when I stumbled across it in an old video store back in college (that actually rented VHS's until 2011 ).

American Pop would make a great Criterion release. Here in Canada we have a group of movie channels called Hollywood Suite (which has a deal with Criterion and shows many of their films). Anyway, they also showed American Pop recently and I thought it was fantastic. Ralph Bakshi made some great films and it's surprising to me that none of his movies are in the Criterion Collection.

was going to say the same thing - particularly the Jarmusch film - that's about as "Criterion" as it gets, I think

Looking at the list of films being shown at the 2018 TCM Film Festival, there's a good deal of them that I feel may be released by Criterion this year or the next.

http://filmfestival.tcm.com/programs/

To name a few...

Bull Durham
Bullitt
Hamlet (1948)
Detour (brand new restoration)
Heaven Can Wait (1978)
Romeo and Juliet (1968)
The Set-up (1949)

Oh, and The World's Greatest Sinner has been rumored to be released by Criterion. Hopefully we'll get some news about that.

I would be down for most of these, as I want to revisit Zeffereli's Romeo and Juliet. I remember liking that one in high school, even if I wasn't the biggest fan of the play.

I like an upgrade of the 1943 Heaven Can Wait. Criterion did release the DVD a long time back. Also, count me in if Detour was ever upgraded to Blu, its one of the best B films I've ever seen, maybe even the best.

I'm also glad to see Detour got restored. I've only seen it once, but it was pretty rough, PQ-wise. This was about ten years ago.

I saw it about a year and a half or so ago I would guess. It was the first film shown on Noir Alley on TCM. It was in OK shape PQ considering everything. Maybe they've been able to restore it even more. Be nice to have a release that isn't from the public domain.

I would love for Criterion to release Romeo and Juliet (1968). One of my favorite films and the best movie adaptation, in my opinion. I have the OOP UK release. I'm not sure why that one went OOP so quickly.

Wouldn't American Pop's music rights be a nucking fightmare? Having said that, any one see that Bakshi film from a few year back? The Coney Island one?

"Bullitt" is completely based around McQueen being McQueen. It's certainly not the most complex film, but has a great atmosphere. I think McQueen made a lot of better films, but "Bullitt" is the one where the essence of his coolness stands out most IMO.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand what's there to "get" with a film like Bullitt. It's not high art, or highly cerebral or anything. It's a great cop thriller, with an awesome car chase scene, and some great dialogue. McQueen is awesome at the role.

Never saw it, but yep, it actually says it's being released by Janus ..Academy Film Archive, and Film Foundation are the ones that did the restoration for Detour too, so I'm hoping Criterion does have that as well, but I'll take it from anyone really.
