Yeah I read Joebuck’s comment not as a specific reply to just Bull Durham but as a reply to lumping that together with the Dietrich/Von Sternberg set and A Matter of Life and Death (which I don’t personally care for but I also realise that is a minority opinion and it is widely beloved).

Bull Durham is wonderful. Of course, it probably helps if one likes baseball to start with.

I was going to reply to his response, which I thought was perfectly fine btw, by saying two things:
1)Sports movies generally don't count among the greatest films ever made. How many sports films are highly rated? Not many. 2)Those actors, while good, haven't really been in truly important American films. Their best films are rather middling oscar films that are quickly forgotten years after their release. A case can be made for Thelma and Louise, and The Shawshank Redemption is popular, but I think you would struggle to argue that they were in great films when looked at from a historical perspective. i.e taking the whole of cinema into account. Bull Durham is not Rocky, and I like Costner. |

That movie is The Bad News Bears and they should get on that immediately. And as long as they're going after great sports movies, Searching for Bobby Fischer would be pretty awesome too. |

I like all three actors.
![]() Kevin Costner is awesome in A Perfect World, Mr. Brooks, and countless others I'm too tired to think of. I need only mention Thelma and Louise for Susan Sarandon. And Tim Robbins was in The Shawshank Redemption - 'nuff said. Quote:
But... I can't argue with this. ![]() Rocky has had a million $5 Blu-ray releases and re-releases though, so I wouldn't waste a cent on a Criterion version. |

Also, I forgot to make this point about why BULL DURHAM is in the Criterion Collection:
Who gives a f**king sh*t? It’s a movie they released. |

![]() Costner, on the other hand, was a big star from the late 80's until the mid 90's, yet again, how many of his films have really held up? I agree with you that A Perfect World is a very good film (I also really like Open Range) but it didn't really make much of an impact at the time and doesn't seem to be all that well regarded today. Dances With Wolves? It's probably more known now as the film that unjustly beat Goodfellas for best picture, and so on and so forth. Even Thelma and Louise tends to be justified more on political grounds than aesthetic ones. i.e as a feminist film etc. Quote:

I can’t wait for the world to explode when Criterion continues the Shelton vibe and releases HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE.
“Oh but Harrison Ford sucks” “John Harnett, who?” “2003! Think of all the great 1903 films Criterion could release!” “What the **** is HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE?” |

If we’re talking about Susan Sarandon, we really need to have Atlantic City in the collection. As for Bull Durham, I thought it was great when I saw it about 30 years ago. I haven’t decided if I need to own it, though. As for Kevin Costner, he more than earned his place in the collection with his performance in The Big Chill. Tim Robbins = Shawshank, nuff said.
Great announcements. Now I just have to save my pennies. |
