Boxing films?

Gotta give a shout out to Walter Hill's terrific debut Hard Times with Charles Bronson and Jim Sheridan's The Boxer with Daniel Day-Lewis (an excellent, politically-charged film that doesn't get enough attention).

I still have the old Anchor Bay DVD that included the excellent extra-Warren Oates: Across the Border which by itself was worth getting the disc for.

I would say Hard Times and Fat City are great films about boxing but more so of the human condition. Really amazing and highly recommended.

Fat City is a phenomenal film.

Speaking of Fat City, here is a video of the 1973 Oscar presentation for Best Supporting Actress that went to Eileen Heckart for Butterflies Are Free. However, I would like to bring your attention presenter Robert Duvall. He begins the presentation rather stoically, but during the list announcement he begins laughing uncontrollably. Afterwards, Duvall confessed. He said that he and Cloris Leachman had decided to share announcing the list. In the moment, he found it extremely ironic that he had to say Shelley Winters to the cue of Fat City.

I thought the first hour of Southpaw was pretty good but then became completely cliched and lazy for the second half and ruined the film for me. Other than that that's the only boxing film that disappointed me off the top of my head.....other than Rocky 5 of course.

The criminally underrated 1992 boxing film Gladiator really needs a blu ray.

Anyone remember this one? Or the sequel? I haven't seen these in decades.

I would also recommend Golden Boy (1939) as a solid entry in the boxing genre. There are better boxing films, but also many worse.

If Criterion want to put out more sports movies they should get to work on restoring this gem (and yes I am biased as its about my team who aren't actually on the poster as that looks like a shot of an amateur game in the background). The best movie ever made about being a fan and one of the best football (or soccer if you are the other side of the pond) movies ever too.

Scanners is once again $17.24 on Amazon (out of stock though) and still that price at Walmart.com (in stock). Walmart is the price leader if that makes a difference to you.

Note: Credit to MifuneFan for finding this deal.

I went with Amazon because I have time to change my mind and cancellations actually work on that site.

Not a blind buy, but I don't know if I love the movie.

Don't get me wrong though, I do like it.

But outside of the Cronenberg factor, I'm quite frankly surprised Criterion released it - the acting from the main character is beyond wooden.

[Show spoiler]

Fever Pitch has a release by Twilight Time. I haven't seen it. The best football/soccer film I've seen though is Alan Clarke's The Firm. It's available as a region B locked release in the UK:

In my opinion, it's Gary Oldman's best performance of his career, although I haven't seen his new Churchill movie. Unbelievable performance. If you're region free and you like Gary Oldman even a little bit, you're really missing out if you don't get it.

The Natural is one of my all-time favorite films. Eight Men Out is another. I'm a 19th Century and pre-war baseball nut, so both resonate with me for different reasons.
