Voices of Light is amazing, my favorite of all the silent film scores.

My brother and I watched it for the first time recently and it was the 24 FPS version with the Voices of Light score. And it was amazing! I would definitely recommend that one.

For Joan of Arc 20 fps is regarded as the more authentic frame-rate but you know, just start watching any one, and when you go over them, you'll find the one that works best for you.

Default Criterion 3-disc cases

Does anyone know if Criterion sells 3-disc cases, or what film might have come in one?

I don't think Criterion sells them themselves, but Casetopia does:

http://www.casetopia.com/Criterion_T..._p/br3-cri.htm

Off-hand, all of the 3-discs I can think of were digipacks (1 Blu / 2 DVDs), but I'm sure they must've used them for at least one release.

You can put it on and judge for yourself. The 24 looks unnaturally fast to me, while the 20 fps looks correct. They say it’s a mystery but the director gave a length of the picture when talking to someone and at 24fps that time is incorrect whereas at 20 the time he mentioned and the runtime of the movie line up. It’s on the special features of the disc. I watched the arguments for both prior to the movie and settled on 20.

I assume you mean non-digipack? My copy of Red River has 3 but it’s a digipack. I have one hardcase with three discs, All That Heaven Allows, it’s clear and at first looks like all my other clear Criterion cases but if you look closely it’s just slightly wider than my other cases. It looks like the standard two disc case when you open it but when you pull out the booklet there is a disc behind it. Hope that helps.

These have been out of stock at Casetopia for a long time. The three-disc Scanavo was used by Criterion on dual format releases like ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS.

I was able to get a couple from Casetopia way back when to use for consolidating some old Criterion DVD discs with the Blu upgrades, but I sure would like a couple more.

I hope they didn't stop making them when Criterion stopped doing dual-format, I would like a few myself.

What I figured too, but Criterion is still selling the dual format ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS (and others?), so you'd think there must be some around. I wish Criterion would just sell them direct as "replacement" cases as a service to those that have these dual format releases. I'm sure they'd sell a lot to others as well.

Flicker Alley also uses the 3-disc cases. Last year's Early Women Filmmakers, The Mack Sennett Collection Vol. 1, and several Cinerama titles.

I just read that Photobucket recently restored all the images they were accused of "holding hostage" last year during their ill-conceived move to generate revenue from 3rd-party hosting by charging $400 for previously free accounts. Seems that after a management reshuffle, the decision was made to restore previous images, and introduce realistic rate bands moving forward.

Anyway, not directly Criterion-related news. But I've posted a few images in this thread before, as have many others, and good to know that they should all now be back.

Question for the Japanese New Wave aficionados: Eros + Massacre recently popped up on Amazon Prime and the runtime is 165 minutes, I was under the impression it was over 3 hours. Is this a director's cut I'm thinking of and if so, should I track that down?

If I we're going to watch A Touch of Zen should I watch it before or after Dragon Inn? Or does it not matter? Dragon Inn was made first correct? I also thought I read somewhere that Come Drink with Me was associated with the other two.

Really doesn't matter. IMO start with Dragon Inn first as it has a more traditional structure (few locations, 'classic' character archetypes, etc) and typical running time. You'll also recognize a bunch of the Dragon Inn actors in Touch of Zen that are playing opposite type of roles.

I love Touch of Zen but it throws a lot at the wall for a first viewing. Also very long.

Anyone know of an expected date for the 'My Criterion' section of the criterion website to be ready? It's been 'under construction' for many weeks and being an anal-retentive collector I want access to this again.

All That Jazz comes in a three disc case but keep in mind the three disc Scanavos are a little thicker than the one disc and two disc versions.

Think we'll get anything horror-related for the October titles?
