A study of both early 20th Century class conditions in a coal mining area of Britain and a treatise on the ever continuing sexual conflict and manipulations between men and women. Some very powerful scenes with some pretty shocking and cynical images that still have a visceral affect on me despite having viewed the film multiple times.

If any of that sparks your interest, then... yes, in my opinion, this is a very good blind buy.
Awesome, thanks! Looks like I'll be picking it up!

That is pretty awesome actually. Definitely let us know if your uncle made it into the movie.

Yeah he did for sure. He actually took his two young daughters to the audition for extras but they said they needed someone just like him for a number of scenes so he actually ended being in two scenes. One on the Arbouretum park near Derby City centre (which I can actually see from the cafeteria at my workplace) and the other at Kedleston Hall. He even got to keep the costumes according to my mum. She is going to watch those scenes with me over the next few weeks when we get chance so we can pick him out.

I agree with this assessment. I don't like many of Ken Russell's films, but I did like this one a lot. This movie is an example of excellent film making.

Completely agree. I love Ken Russell's more prototypically weird stuff, but he handles this departure from that territory extraordinarily well. It's rare to see a trio of actors the caliber of Reed, Glenda Jackson, and Alan Bates in a film together, so that's also a treat.

Default Certain Women

I watched Certain Women on Netflix a few days ago and absolutely hated it. I get the intention of keeping the movie at a slow pace but even the ending was disappointing. There was one part that had potential to make the movie more interesting but it went back to the same monotone script. I understand what the director was trying to accomplish but the movie just didn’t sit well with me. Any thoughts?

Is it pretty normal for the Criterion’s to have small bends/tears on the cover art? Especially towards the bottom?

Wasn't a fan at all. I think "Meek's Cutoff" and "Wendy and Lucy" are great and think Michelle Williams and Laura Dern are two of the best current actresses, so I expected to enjoy it. I also don't hate Kristen Stewart like many people do. Just didn't work for me, unfortunately.

[Show spoiler]
Was the cover improperly positioned in the case? I've had it with a couple Criterions where the cover art wasn't in there properly, it kind of slipped out the bottom a bit so when the case was closed the bottom lip of the case caused it to have that "bend" in it. None of mine have actually been ripped but I have seen some bad examples on store shelves where there's been little rips along the edges as well because of that same problem.

I absolutely loved it. I couldn't tell you why if you had a gun to my head but with the exception of one subplot (that I still more or less liked) I was completely mesmerized.

In a way (and this comparison is only occurring to me now) it reminds me a lot of my reaction to People on Sunday.

I think Certai Women is one of those films that either works for you or doesn’t! I absolutely love it, but no way for me to explain it! Everything just works! The pace and the performances!

I would watch a entire movie of just the Kristen Stewart section. Did it make anyone else so mad that she didn’t finish all her food at the dinner ever?

Anyways, I loved it of course.

i went a bit mad last year & purchased well over 100 Criterion titles, at least 90% of which were blind buys and still remain unwatched.

here is a list of the Criterion titles i own

i typically have time to watch 2-3 movies per night. i'm curious what some of you aficionados would do to piece together some creative double or triple features. i'm less interested in watching, for example, 3 films by the same director (too easy), but i wouldn't be opposed to other common threads such as actors, thematic elements, general mood, etc.

i also wouldn't be opposed to a few more suggestions on new titles. "if you like that, check this one out!"

so have at it, folks! would love to see what some of you come up with...
here's one I like for the Nazi occupation of France. each film has a different vibe, too:

Army of Shadows
Au Revoir Les Enfants
The Last Metro

When she pulls her arm away when the other girl tries to lovingly touch it is one of the most heartbreaking moments I’ve ever seen. Such simplicity, yet thunderous in its meaning. Reichardt really is one of the best.

Yep that was it, I assume nothing to return it over though

Janus Films has acquired the rights to the documentary, The Eyes of Orson Welles, and will release it theatrically next year.

Does Criterion replace defective discs? I know they did that for the bad batch of discs from 2010 that were rotting, but do they replace other discs that freeze and skip?

I noticed that, too. In a lot of TV shows the characters will often pick at their food and never take a bite.

In The Secret of the Grain no food was wasted.
