When watching on my OPPO 103, menus appear in 4:3, then when pressing play or selecting a new supplement, it quickly stretches to full fill the 16:9 screen. Is that an error or issue? Quickly tested some Simpsons, futurama, transformers s1disc1, and disaster artist dvd, none of them do this.

I've seen this happen before on other discs and players. I'd say it has to do with how the disc was set to display anamorphic widescreen. Those animated DVDs would have 4:3 menus along with 4:3 episodes. The Disaster Artist might just display the menu and feature in 16:9 properly, as it's a new movie.

Is anyone else fascinated by Passion of Joan of Arc? I watched it for the first time the other week and it instantly became one of my favorite films of all time. Instantly bought the criterion for it.
