I’ve watched it twice now and i’m still not sure whether I think Quadrophenia is a great film or a pretty good film that’s elevated beyond what it really is by an epic soundtrack.

I know I like it.

...not sure I love it.

I do love it. The music is definitely the star, but the film's strength for me is in the humour and the social/cultural observations - much of which I identified with growing up in London.

I saw it in the theater when it came out, it's not great but I enjoyed it. I don't own it. The one I really want Criterion to release is Tommy. Now that is a GREAT movie deserving of a Criterion release....

Mulvaney confirmed they have multiple Wong Kar-wai films that are all presently undergoing a restoration.

Ok, Criterion- if you're going to be using new materials for the Wong Kar-wai films, it's getting serious.

It's time to release 4K discs!

Agreed.

The whole site it totally form over function. It's made to look prettier. But it works for sh*t.

For those without a 4K setup.

If Criterion announced they'd be releasing movies on 4K disc would this prompt you to purchase a 4K television?

How likely is it that Criterion would be able to offer a significant amount of their catalog on UHD? Most UHD releases come from the studios that own the films per se. The fact that UHD is not region-locked means licensors will not be able to selectively sell to different boutique labels in different regions by forcing them to lock for their respective territories, which in turn will significantly reduce the amount of material that will be available to any boutique label for release on UHD.

Fairly sure that whether people upgrade to 4K or not (and after a certain point of time it might not even be possible to buy a non-4K TV), what a label like Criterion or Arrow does will have very little impact...unless there is a move to modify the UHD specs and bring in region-locking.

Some other rock films that would make me just as happy:

The Last Waltz (would love some new extras)
I'm Not There
Year of the Horse (or anything Neil Young related, even if it's a double dip)
The Wall
Anvil
200 Motels
Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park

No. I've thought about upgrading, but I'll probably wait until my current TV has issues. I have a UHD player, but no 4K content.

Realistically, if Criterion started releasing UHD's, I'd probably stop buying Criterions until after I got a 4K screen.

Why? They would most likely be UHD/BD combo packs, just like every other retailer does, so you'd still have the BD.

And you'd be future-proofed for when you did have a 4K setup.

Hopefully it lasts longer than the Blu-Ray/DVD combo. Also, is met with much less blowback from the people on the boards.

Im already buying UHD discs while I dont have a UHD screen yet (still an panny plasma from 2013, wich still works great and have no plans to replace it), as long they include regular BD's with the UHD blurays I see why not. I already have a UHD player (sony x700).

That being said I dont expect any boutique label to release UHD blurays anytime soon. One major obstacle for them is still the fact that UHD blurays are regionfree, so if they want to license a movie it had to be for worldwide release, wich I can imagine will increase the cost at such levels that a lot of those labels dont think its worth it atm.

I actually think they will release UHD material sooner on streaming because there they can control the access by geo blocking. So if it happens we'll see it sooner happen that filmstruck starts streaming in UHD.

I'm not so sure about that. Criterion used to do the combo packs with DVD and Blu-Rays, but they stopped. Would they offer a new combo pack with Blu-Ray and UHD? I have my doubts.

With that said, if the combo packs were offered I probably wouldn't delay my purchases.

They stopped when they figured that DVD was superfluous and the vast majority were picking up for the BD-only. You'd likely be good for a few years of BD/UHD combos as the format is still very much in the uptake/transition phase of the lifecycle.

No.

I'll purchase a 4K television when my current one dies out (simply because 4K TVs will probably be the ones available), but I have zero interest in 4K discs. Despite what enthusiasts of the newest niche format say, Blu-rays still provide an excellent viewing experience - and are expensive enough, especially for a foreigner like me (US$1 = R$4,1).

Why? Because UHD is a VERY small niche in the marketplace. Not enough people have it to constitute UHD only releases, plain and simple. I have zero doubts. Releasing a UHD only would be a death knell.

Not sure why you would doubt it when it's abundantly clear. I personally don't think they will release physical 4K discs. 4K is for streaming now, and they have their FilmStruck channel for that.
