that's great for the Killer but very sad for Hardboiled. they are some great movies

Shout seem to be doing the transfers right on these and they are using the glorious ORIGINAL poster art, which is a big plus. I suspect Criterion would have used a lot more sedate and arty kind of artwork.

Going through my DVD collection, I found out that I do in fact own Alexander Payne's first movie Citizen Ruth. That movie, along with About Schmidt and Sideways, really deserves the Criterion treatment.

I love the silent Ben-Hur which I actually think is better than the 59 version. I actually got the UK Collector's Edition(which is Region Free in case others want to know) to be able to own a copy of it that I can watch whenever. Generally, I buy most silents whenever they become available for BluRay. With The Kid Brother its possible it could ran very early in the day. A lot of time TCM will show Keystone silents or Lloyd very early in the morning generally 6-9 AM.

I'll repeat my wish for a Kurosawa collection. If they do release one I'm almost sure they would release them individually for those who don't want to buy a boxset. Or at least it would be nice if they would release a WKW set before the end of the year. I'm almost sure we will get something for Fellini in 2020.

I think a lot of things are lining up for an AK set in November.

-No AK release since 11/2016 even though films like Red Beard and Seven Samurai have had restorations/4k scans
-Criterion doesn't re-issue a film (packaging refresh aside) unless it's part of a larger set (e.g. Seventh Seal, Play Time). I'd imagine Criterion would like to make arguably their flagship title available on blu-ray from a 4K master.
-Spine #1000 should be released in November
-November traditionally has a box set released

Not to mention Ran got a 4K restoration too. With Criterion having a deal with SC, I'm really hoping this adds up an AK set. Not to mention Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, and many more Kurosawa's still have not made there BluRay debut.

Indeed. Such a tragedy there's no Region A release with subs. The quality difference between the upscaled Lionsgate BD and the 4K scan is massive. I mean, the Lionsgate BD looks more like a VHS than even DVD quality.

Yeah, the 4K version by SC is superb. I finally broke down and bought it a few months ago being one of the major reasons why I got a region free player. Still have to dive into the hours of special features.

I assume the silent Ben-Hur is in SD (and not HD) just like on the US Ultimate Collector's Edition? Any other reason to own the UK over the US set?

For me, it would be John Ford.

So many of his great films (Wagon Master, Seven Women, The Wings of Eagles, The Informer, The Long Voyage Home, Cheyenne Autumn, Tobacco Road, Judge Priest, and Steamboat Round the Bend) have not even been released on North American blu-ray.

In addition, to see his masterpieces The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, and The Quiet Man given the Criterion treatment would be a dream come true!

I think for a long time the 3-disc UK set was cheaper (albeit lacking the swag) than the US set, way back in 2012 it could be had for less than 10 pounds.

It's historical and they did Tokyo Olympiad [which I would love to get only to round out my Asian collection]. I personally think some movies are stupid so I don't buy them but I don't care what Criterion puts in the collection as I buy only what I really want.

Yeah, it's just been tealed and has severe black crush, at least on the SC disc.

I would assume its the same as the US version. The only difference I would think is the lack of fancy packaging. Has all the same extras. If you own the US set then there's not much of a reason to own this, though if you don't and also don't want to pay loads of cash, the UK version is the way to go.

I got my copy for $18 USD compared to the US set which was a fortune via 3rd party Amazon and eBay listings.

While, Ford would be great and I would buy it Day 1, I don't really think a Ford boxset is in the cards. The Quiet Man has a great Olive Signature version. Many of those films need a lot of work. Then there's numerous films that are with TT. The existing WB version of The Searchers is already superb. Some of these titles I think Warner would get around to releasing via the WAC. Would Paramount being Paramount allow Criterion to re-release Liberty Valance?

Though there's some of his Fox work in the 40s which would be nice to have and would make sense as individual releases such as Grapes of Wrath and How Green Was My Valley.

I have head some complaints about a The Searchers color timing.

If Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valanace got extra loaded releases, I would jump on them!
