That was a while ago and maybe Criterion preferred the older restoration, maybe the new one was done by L'Immagine Ritrovata and was piss yellow.

I bought the disc and have not watched it yet, I guess I should've waited and read more about it before buying it.

They have released piss yellow Ritrovata restorations before and recently did with Police Story, but fair point i guess. I think the 4k restoration looks better in every single way: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=8843&d2=8839&c=3567

Damn I just bought the only copy of Fires on the Plain and there is a damn chunk missing out of the case. what should I do? Since it's a DVD case. I know Criterion has the BD cases. would they even have the DVD ones?

Out of the 60 plus Criterion titles I own, I only have one Criterion DVD left in my collection, The Hit, does anyone know if Criterion still own the right to this film? And why Criterion hasn't yet released this film on Blu ray? Shame John Hurt has passed on since I would have loved to hear his views and experiences on this film.

That is a major bummer about Chinatown. Thankfully I really like the current blu ray transfer just fine. Hopefully if the 4K transfer is ever released it won't have all of the unfortunate issues that the recent 4K releases for Forrest Gump has.

Paramount really seems to be backing up streaming with their streaming exclusive 4K transfers such as Chinatown (if Chinatown has been on their streaming site) and It's a Wonderful Life strangely. Very unfortunate.

It doesn't show on the site and I can not find a laserdisc release of it. They did release It's a Wonderful Life though. Are you sure?

A screening earlier this year at BAMPFA credited the film to Janus Films.

Ok. I will have to wait for a release then but it will be worth it.

Criterion has the rights too it now but have never released it. The only company I've known it was with before Criterion is New Yorker Video. I don't believe there ever was a laserdisc release for it.

Line for line The Palm Beach Story is probably Sturges’ funniest film. It doesn’t have the overall polish of The Lady Eve but it still has wondrous performances that lap up the dialogue and play off each other amazingly.

I have the New Yorker DVD for Marosobi and hated it. Always wanted a Criterion version but at least the BD is so much better for that beloved film and my first Kore-eda.

I posted this a couple of months ago. Brilliant film, and positive signs.

If you can afford it you should buy the Bandai Visual blu-rays of the Kore-eda films from Japan. I bought them last year individually and the transfers are great and have nice English subtitling. Distance has a bit of spots and dirt, but since that film is made like a documentary that film look worked with the story.

Great movie, and since you mention Preston Sturges, what a pity that Criterion has yet to release the hilarious Unfaithfully Yours (1948).
