Wow. I had totally forgotten what a pain in the ass it is to properly calibrate a television. This is going to take forever.

I liked them when they were able to accommodate a lot more supplemental material or went to town with fantastic artwork. I mean, we were seeing books in the dual format packages all the time, Red River, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Tess, which I loved. I loved the fold-out of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World even though it was clunky. It seems like being able to produce just one version of a package let them get far more ambitious.

I'm watching Kurosawa's I Live in Fear (aka Record of a Living Being) (1955), and it's mind-blowing how well Mifune was transformed into an elderly man for the film

He's only about 36 here!

and the film came out just a year after him starring in Seven Samurai where he looked like this

Kurosawa had an outstanding acting group. Shimura Takashi did the same thing with Ikiru and Seven Samurai. What an incredible transformation that was. From a desperate, dying old man to the head of the samurai. There's a very good argument that can be made that Shimura was the better actor, but they both were two of the best actors out there.

Now that Mifune and Shimura have been praised here, I cannot help but wave a flag for yet another great actor from Kurosawa films: NAKADAI Tatsuya. Starting his film career as an extra in Seven Samurai, he played a cunning and vicious villain in Yojimbo, an equally villainous yet much more dignified samurai in Sanjuro, a soft-spoken but passionate lead detective in High and Law. And later, he played a double role of a wise and majestic warlord and his shadow warrior who was actually a petty thief in Kagemusha, and finally, a forlorn and mad King Lear in Ran.

One might even argue that Nakadai is the most versatile of the three. Throughout his (still ongoing) career, he has worked with other masters of Japanese cinema in many different genres, playing many different types of characters. And Criterion released a few of them, too: Black River, The Human Condition, When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, Harakiri, Kwaidan, The Sword of Doom, The Face of Another, Samurai Rebellion, Kill!, Zatoichi Goes to the Fire Festival... and these are only part of his huge and successful career.

My Bergman set arrived today. It's huge. A lot heavier then I imagined. I'm hoping to dig into this tonight. I've only seen a few of them. I think I'll watch these in the Criterion suggested order. It may take me a couple months to watch them all.

In a couple of weeks, I'm scheduled to go to the hospital for a major colon surgery that will remove a precancerous mass, along with part of my colon, and reattach the small intestine to the colon farther up.

During the preliminary meeting with the surgeon a couple of days ago, I was told that, after the operation, I will not be able to lift over 10lbs for the next six weeks.

My first thought was that Ingmar Bergman's Cinema will be out of the question during my recovery.

All the best for a speedy recovery, Owl. A close friend had similar surgery back in January, so I have some understanding of where you're at.

Not sure Bergman would my first choice for post-op recovery. Maybe some lighter fare like Bond to lift the spirits!

You’ll be up and recovering in no time, as one can only do when drowning in a sea of Blu. The key word is DISTRACTION. It’s times like these when you will truly need a well rounded collection to see you through and I know you’ve got that in spades. So stock up on the pillows and embrace all the distractions, my friend.

Sorry to hear about the plumbing problem. It happens to men at a certain age. The
surgery you describe is seriously inconvenient and painful, but routine. You'll feel
better afterward and be kicking up a fuss in a no time. Just don't try to get out of the
bed for at least 24 hours after the surgery. Let everybody spoil you for a change.

Take the Bergman discs out of the box and slide them into paper sleeves before you
go in. That'll make it easy when you get back.

I hope you have a speedy recovery. I was in the same boat at almost exactly the same time last year when I said goodbye to two feet of colon and small intestine.

I could certainly PM you some advice/pointers if you want to hear the nitty-gritty about recovery.

I hope you recover quickly without any problems. My mom had part of her colon removed about 10 years ago when she was dealing with Diverticulitis. The treatments I saw her go through were not fun whatsoever, as a stoma nurse had to come to our house every day to change the colostomy bags. It's something I pray nobody has to endure, and I hope you don't need this either. With that said, you've been an awesome member in this forum, and along with the Ingmar Bergman box set, you probably will want to avoid lifting the Zatoichi set as well. This is where digital/streaming movies come in handy.
