For the record, I bought my first HD DVD player a few weeks before Toshiba pulled the plug. I was able to get most of the HD DVDs I purchased for around $2, which is far less than what they were selling for on Blu-Ray. And, some of those HD DVD's have still not been released on Blu-Ray. Not to mention that my Toshiba XA2, which I was able to pick up for $150, is still one of the best DVD upconverters out there.

It is kind of a shame that no one really took advantage of WiFi capabilities for bluray. Even criterion. Some cool stuff could be done, additional supplements like live q&a’s, additional commentaries, etc—which is kind of what was promised originally

Thing is - Smart TVs / Streaming services can provide this with far less cumbersome hoops to jump through. I can go to my phone, tablet or PS3/4 and load up the YouTube app and watch hundreds of Q&As recorded in a matter of seconds. Why would I want to load up a disc, select a BD Live option, wait for a long connection period, then search through a poorly designed proprietary website instead?

Nobody goes to a film's unique url to watch a trailer online when they can just YouTube it on the company's YouTube channel, and that's several less steps than accessing something on a internet connected disc/player.

It has managed to make a big enough impact to do so, just as much as I've been inspired to revisit Doctor Zhivago a few times (probably the next closest comparable film besides maybe Barry Lyndon). For that matter, I've had the strange effect with David Lean's epic films, whereby I found the first viewing tedious but loved them on rewatches. It will likely happen to me again if I through WaP again and make a bigger effort to follow and care for it. I haven't seen Berlin Alexanderplatz (do I want to? yeesh), but WaP is certainly more eventful than Andrei Rublev (which I do appreciate in its own way, but it's a very different experience).

In the end, it might just boil down to individual genre preferences. I do like the big epic pictures like this one. For you and everyone else, it might be best to rent WaP first, or catch it on the Criterion channel (assuming it's there).

I've watched Shoah three times now. I just don't get tired of it -- filmaking or content.

I’ve got it, and I plan to watch it either later in the week, or this weekend. I picked up an absolutely pristine copy during the last Barnes & Noble sale.

It’s a documentary I’ve wanted to see since first reading about it, not long after beginning my Criterion journey, and buying my first Criterion, On the Waterfront. But I need to be in both the right frame of mind, and feeling well enough where I can devote my full attention to it. The survivors interviewed by Claude Lanzmann, men and women who courageously shared their stories, and their recollections, deserve no less.

It's a great investment. I'm a charter member and I pay $89.95 annually. That rate is locked in and can't go up. That's a steal. I'm still going to buy my favorite Criterion Releases on Blu-Ray, but this is a great way to check a movie out before I buy.

Admittedly, I can get almost every Criterion release from my local library. But the Criterion Channel is so much more convenient.

I was thinking perhaps The Ghost Writer. Criterion loves Polanski, although I would think that The Tenant would come first..
