Not me. My love for Criterion is just a side effect of my love for cinema history, so all my BDs/DVDs are stored in chronological order of their original release... from A TRIP TO THE MOON and INTOLERANCE up through modern day, with all glorious Criterions in their rightful, historical places. I love to look at my library shelves and see the whole sweep of film history. Very inspiring to me... and a feeling I have yet to be able to recreate with a bunch of thumbnails on a screen. Viva la physical media!

I'd never do it by spine number - just too hard to find what I want. But I'm thinking of storing them together in alphabetical order. The only problem is that things like the Bergman and Zatoichi sets won't fit on the shelves, so they'll have to be stored separately from everything else.

I can certainly see why one would want to store titles that way. I wouldn't. It would just complicate things for me. I'd go crazy trying to find things.

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I do keep a fairly lean collection; only around 250; and only 150 of those are in my chronological "Top Tier" (the rest are filed under "Tier Two/Guilty Pleasures"). When I look at my "Top Tier" library, I love to see only those titles that really make my cinephile heart flutter. If it doesn't cause that very definite (yet intangible) reaction in me, I either demote it to "Tier Two/Guilty Pleasure" or sell it.

I'd say half of my collection is of films I bought that I had never seen and I only bought those because they were at a good price. I've stopped doing blind buys and making sure that anything I do buy is something I'll rewatch. I haven't sold anything because I'm lazy and there's a part of me that doesn't want to see any title leave my collection.

I store all my films by by genre, then alphabetically within each genre. For instance Adventure films, Comedy films, Crime films, Horror films, Sci-fi films, War films, Comic book type films, Sports films, Westerns etc

I store all single movies that I have viewed in alphabetical order in my main movie closet. In that closet I have all Christmas related films on the bottom shelf. It just makes it easier, as I tend to watch only Christmas type movies from Thanksgiving until Christmas.

I then have a cabinet that holds all of my unopened and unwatched titles. And another cabinet that holds all my titles with sequels or TV seasons.

But now I'm beginning to think that I should store my Criterion titles separately. I don't own that many Criterion releases - 26 to be exact. But that number counts multi-sets, such as Zatoichi and Bergman, as one. So I have many more actual Criterion titles.
I store the BDs/DVDs separately but I don't have enough Criterions to really separate them from the Eureka, Flicker Alley, Arrow, and the Studiocanal titles. Right now its just by year of release. Of course, I have the Zatoichi, Godzilla, Bergman, Dietrich-Von Sternberg, Classic Hitchcock, Silence of the Lambs, and Dr. Strangelove displayed separately. When I get another shelf I might try to separate the titles more complexly like Criterion one, Eureka two, Arrow three, Flicker Alley 4, and so on.

Anyone notice Kino Lorber publishes the masterpieces and Criterion Collection publishes fringe and weird movies these days.

Years and years ago -- I can't even say how long ago it was -- I tried having my DVDs stored chronologically. That worked really well for about ... 6 months. I'm exaggerating, but it really didn't last long until I was searching and searching for titles.

Eventually, when I made the full-on move to Blu-ray, I separated DVD and BD, and also kept Criterion titles separate as well.

Then, I ran out of shelf-space. And now, as frustrating as it is, I'm trying to figure out how to re-organize EVERYTHING. So, it's chaos ... and worse. For example, it took me two nights to find the recently purchased Mission Impossible box-set. So, getting everything in some sort of sensible order is my next task. I'm just not sure how long it will take me.

We have a lot of the same films in our collections. Would you mind recommending a few Criterions for me? I already went and picked up what I wanted at B&N but I have been thinking about going back for a few blind buys....
I have Some like it hot, its one of my favorite comedy's. I wish it was the criterion one but oh well.
I don't know why I don't have Its a mad mad mad world in my collection its definitely a classic. I'll probably get that one this sale.
I recommend a Charlie Chaplin film in your collection, my favorite is Modern times. My recommendations for your collection would be
For classic Hollywood noir I'd go with Gilda, for 70s gritty crime film I love The friends of Eddie
Coyle andd for Horror I'd get the Brood

I am concerned that it is a court room drama more than a war movie. Court room dramas bore me to tears. I love the Cohen stuff but didn't care for Millers Crossing so I have been hesitant about Blood Simple. I should probably just go for it. The others weren't even on my radar so I will definitely look into those. Thanks for the recommendations!
You bet, man. I've seen that you're not afraid of something a bit offbeat, but that can be as subjective as anything else. As much as I love Repo Man, you might try to see a piece of it again before plunging. But I would encourage you to give it another try.

Paths of Glory is another film that I consider essential, but it's not what I'd call a war film or a courtroom drama - much more an anti-war film. There are elements of both within it, but it's more about the psychology of heroism & cowardice. It's brilliant early Kubrick and it's my favorite Kirk Douglas film. If you have the DVD, that's a good way to see what you think.

I had to triple check that you didn't have The Night of the Hunter and recommend it with no reservations. Sounds like you're on to it.

As for the others, I think Blow Out is extremely safe as well. Tampopo is also quite safe, but maybe a little whimsical. At least watch the trailer. If it grabs you, the movie probably will too - it has a lot of heart. The Lure is if you're looking for something off the main menu. It's very much a love it or hate it kind of film. But if you're intrigued by sexy mermaid horror musicals, I'd say it's worth digging in to. If you hate the music, I'd let it go.

I will be interested in you saying what you consider masterpieces and fringe and weird movies? Because, Criterion is releasing plenty of masterpieces lately as had Kino.

Kino did put out 3 Chuck Norris movies, Criterion has put out none, so that tracks.

I would day it's equal parts combat, courtroom drama, and military/political intrigue.

I do alphabetical too (albeit keeping some labels together for the sake of convenience in storing them across different shelves). It is a simple system of identifying a title and at the same time offers an interesting randomness in terms of what titles sit next to it ("I think I'll watch Spartacus...but hey, there's Street Trash, haven't seen THAT one in a while")
