The Bad Sleep Well and Stray Dog(another I want) have seen releases in France that only have French subs, so I wonder what the hold up is in North America? Is the transfer used in the French versions not the one in the Toho versions or what, I wonder?
If The Bad Sleep Well and Stray Dog have HD transfers already, then I truly wonder what the hold up is. Kurosawa is usually a pretty solid seller. I love the Bad Sleep Well and Stray Dog and have been hoping for an upgrade for what seems like forever. I just wish Criterion released more Japanese films on Blu-ray period at this point.

How is the DVD of Samurai Rebellion? I've been waiting for a blu ray release of it for many years before watching it and it's driving me crazy. Or is there an HDTV rip of it out there?

Picked up the Godzilla set today. Even though I wish it fit with the other releases, I do have to say that this is a gorgeous release.

Hey old buddy B! You got that right. Hard to trim down my passion. I'm trying... by not buying... via flying... past the media "sections" whenever I'm in B&N. I honestly used to go WILD and buy like 40-50 Criterions a year. Now I'm lucky if its as many as 10 Criterions a year. Yeah, I'm at 274 Criterions in my collection now. Ever since people advised me to add some titles so I have a "serious film library", I amassed more releases. I'd say I have a respectable collection though now. But still buying blu-rays.

Here's my poem for the night:

Years ago I spent lots of money
Trying to prove my life wasn't funny
But after time flies and sighs some cries
A film buff's mind is full of whys

Though Criterions are part of my life thus far
A movie every night makes me feel like a star
As I pop that disc into my black plastic machine
David Lynch & Cronenberg permeate my spleen

Now if you laugh, laugh with me
Don't forget to drink some herbal tea
Because that's what I like to drink while I watch
After trying to clean up the yogurt I splotched
On my plaid blue pajamas next to my space heater
Cause movies and cold weather sure make me an eater!

It's my all time favorite Kurosawa film. Yes, I love every one of his films that I have seen, but something about THE BAD SLEEP WELL really got to me. The way some incredible masterpieces of cinema wind up being, I can't really explain it, it just is.

Is there a separate thread on the forums for the Criterion Channel, or should all Criterion Channel related posts be placed here?

These were mine:

The only blind buy was Police Story/PS2. Wasn't disappointed. I've seen the others on DVD. Not sure yet if I'm gonna get more before the sale is over. I want that John Cassavetes collection, but it would be more tempting with Love Streams included. I liked that movie as well. Also, maybe the Jacques Tati collection, though I've already seen almost all of them via Netflix rentals (PlayTime twice).

I posted this on the Criterion Channel thread but, from the looks of it, that doesn't get much traffic. So I thought I'd post it here.

I am hoping that someone can help me out. I was wondering if there is a way to identify the titles that have been released by Criterion as opposed to other films that are simply available on the Criterion Channel. There seems to be a definite difference in PQ for some films, especially those that have not been given the Criterion workup. I am hoping there is a quick way to differentiate between Criterion Releases and Non-Criterion Releases. I could always just check the website for any title, but if I could avoid that step it would be helpful.

Thanks.

not bad. better than what I can do. I, too, have plaid blue pajama bottoms that I'm frequently wearing when it's movie time. not a tea person, though. whiskey sour.

recently, I exported all of the titles in my collection to Excel and embarked on ranking the films 1st to 250th (or how many ever I have.) I started with the films on the bottom. interesting to analyze and see which movies I own that I don't much care for. some titles I have because they are by a director I love or star an actor I really like, so I'll keep those. there were several, however, that I'm asking myself why I own them.

250 isn't a lot. especially compared to some other collections posted here. I have DVDs, too, though, and storage is becoming an issue.

I subscribe to the Depeche Mode philosophy that "everything counts in large amounts," so any space in the house I can clear out or any extra few bucks in my pocket is definitely welcomed.

Wow, funny you mentioned Depeche Mode. Last night I went to see the world premiere (and only showing) of the new Anton Corbijn movie Spirits in the Forest at this giant IMAX screen here in my city. It was about 6 Depeche Mode fans who all ended up at the final concert of the tour in Berlin last year. Pretty good visuals, though the storytelling at times wasn't so intriguing (for a few of the fans). Not an easy film to make no doubt. The show was sold out and I ended up meeting some serious Depeche Mode fans while waiting in line.

I just took a screenshot of my Excel spreadsheet (or "Numbers" here on the Mac I use). You can see how I sort my movie collection. I mark some titles in red if they're out of print or valuable. 250 total movies in your library isn't too large indeed. I have close to 600 now but its not about quantity, but quality. I'd like to continue editing my collection, selling films I don't enjoy watching or only watched once or twice. Hard to do because I have a lot of classic movies on Criterion that I "should" keep but that's subjective. And if I never watch them, what's the point, right? Not easy editing out collections.

I don’t mind them as much for box sets like Cassavetes, etc but I don’t get why for standalone releases. Such a pain to find a sealed one that’s not dented up in some way. And many times it’s just random titles that get digipaks. Prefer some uniformity.
