Yeah i'm aware of those, but I would like a better remastered edition from CRITERION with some decent extras and packaging/artwork. Instead of an average run of the mill release, Although the "The King Of Comedy" Steelbook looks pretty good.

So this is still MIA on disc (DVD or blu-ray I believe) in any English-speaking territory, sadly. But it's being remade YET AGAIN. How can such an influential film be this hard to get your hands on? Criterion is basically the only hope for it to ever be released, and I doubt it's even on their radar.

‘The Shallows’ Director Jaume Collet-Serra to Helm Sports Movie Remake ‘Victory’

Like the 1981 soccer flick Escape for Victory (starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Cain, and the Brazilian soccer legend Pele), this is loosely based on the legendary Death Match, a reported football match between a Nazi German team and Ukrainian prisoners of war in Kyiv. It's believed that this film (and Victory) may have actually inspired the original The Longest Yard. Unlike Victory, however, this one is actually good.

I'm probably the only person on the planet who wants this random, black and white Hungarian soccer movie released. But if anyone else is interested in maybe checking this one out one day, feel free to throw a request towards Criterion's email suggestions@criterion.com with me.

Please let Criterion know that The Hungarian National Film Archive seems to have the rights (at least within Hungary): http://www.filmintezet.hu/en/dvd/cat...lected-works-i

I can't think of any other label who would even entertain the idea of touching it. Any help to get this released would be much appreciated.

I think just because it was a Spielberg film, TTRL got totally overlooked by SPR.

Watching Paths of Glory yesterday, you just despise the general so much who sits in his lovely house while the men are fighting on the battlefield, the same way that you can't stand Nick Nolte's character, especially when he's giving Staros the order for him & his men to go forward but he refuses

John Travolta with that moustache still makes me hurl though

I really hope Criterion will give us The City of Lost Children for the 25th anniversary. That movie is long overdue for a new HD remaster.

I vividly remember seeing Thin Red Line in cinemas in a fairly packed theater and most people groaning at the end of it. I love Thin Red Line and I’ve revisited it many more times than I have SPR, but SPR is just a more mainstream/accessible film to most. I don’t know if it’s just the Spielberg name or the Spielberg name plus his the narrative isn’t as challenging

I've been waiting on The Grand Budapest Hotel since I very first saw it. I knew it was destined for Criterion and put off buying it until now. Happy day!

Thumbs up

Glad to see all The Cremator love in this thread. It really is an unsung masterwork of "smuggler" cinema (to use Scorsese's term). Rudolf Hrušínský's lead performance has to be one of the creepiest ever, and Zdeněk Liška's haunting score is a personal favorite.

I would assume the transfer will be different. Will buy if the image quality looks better, but will keep the UK for the bonus features.
The Criterion employs a brand new 4K restoration financed by the Czech Film Fund, which debuted only last year. This release promises to be a substantial upgrade over the solid, but unspectacular Second Run edition.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is probably my favorite Wes Anderson movie next to The Royal Tenenbaums. Even if you're not a fan of his style on Rushmore or The Life Aquatic, this is a flat-out great film.

The Cremator and Destry Rides Again look good, too.

While I still have my original Army of Shadows from 2011, great to see it back in print since I think it's Melville's greatest film.

From listening to the WAC podcast, it sounds like they're doing more full 4K work than before. Their usual 2K fine-grain/interpositive approach is fine for most titles, but I'd imagine anything nitrate-era could use updated preservation work anyways.

If a little bit of patience is what it takes for films like The Thin Man to finally look sparkling on home video after years of scratchy transfers, I'm all for it.

In this case, I will definitely have to get the Criterion version. I'm still very intrigued by the audio commentary on the Second Run disc, however. Part of me wishes I had already picked it up a couple months ago when I had it in my cart so I wouldn't have a decision to make about whether or not to double dip. I don't suppose that commentary might be available anywhere outside of that disc...

I hope so, and there are some positive indications. With Diamonds of the Night, then the Zeman box set, and now this, it wouldn't surprise me. Perhaps at least some Blu-Ray upgrades of Closely Watched Trains or The Firemen's Ball.

To add to this, out of curiosity, I looked up which Czechoslovakian films are currently on The Criterion Channel, since that is where I originally saw The Cremator. Here is a list of films there that they haven't already released or announced (including those only currently on DVD and in their Pearls of the Czech New Wave Eclipse series: Capricious Summer, Daisies, The Joke, A Report on the Party and Guests, Pearls of the Deep, and Return of the Prodigal Son):

Something Different by Vera Chytilova
The Ear by Karel Kachyna
All My Good Countrymen by Vojtech Jasny
Courage for Every Day by Evald Schorm

All of them begin with the Criterion logo. There are also some shorts:

The Junk Shop by Juraj Herz
A Boring Afternoon by Ivan Passer
Uncle by Jaromil Jires
Footprints by Jaromil Jires
The Hall of Lost Footsteps by Jaromil Jires

All of which also begin with the Criterion logo.

I concur. it’s frustrating being a Garbo fan. But at least she has two. It’s even more frustrating being a Jean Harlow fan. I can watch The Public Enemy, and, well, The Public Enemy again.

I kid you not. Two-thirds of my DVR is filled with films from Garbo, Harlow, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, William Powell and Myrna Loy, and Barbara Stanwyck (don’t even get me started on the glaring omissions from her filmography). Conquest, Queen Christina, A Woman of Affairs, Camille, Mata Hari, Top Hat, Carefree, Roberta, Follow the Fleet, The Barkley’s of Broadway, Shall We Dance, Love Crazy, Double Wedding, Libeled Lady, The Girl From Missouri, Riffraff, Red Headed Woman, Red Dust, The Purchase Price, Union Pacific, Lady of Burlesque, The Lady Eve, These Wilder Years, You Belong to Me, To Please a Lady, Executive Suite.

Besides Garbo and Harlow, Ginger Rogers is the most criminally underrepresented major Golden Age of Hollywood actress on blu-ray, save for maybe Mae West. And when I look at the films I’ve saved listed above, it just doesn’t make sense that they’re not getting released. They have some major stars like Clark Gable, James Cagney, Spencer Tracy, Henry Fonda. You can’t tell me these wouldn’t be highly attractive to classic film fans.

Joan Blondell is another actress that needs more of her movies out. Most of her filmography that has been released represents her later career. I’m thrilled that Warner Archive released Footlight Parade. Now, Gold Diggers of 1933 needs to get an issue. Hell, just give me anything with choreography by Busby Berkeley, and call it a day. I’m good with all those 30s big production movies.

And while I’m on my soap box-I bought the The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection. Would it be asking too much for A Day At the Races and A Night At the Opera to come out? They’re perma saved on my DVR as well.

Oh yes, malick is definitely more for cinephiles than your regular movie goer
I imagine they were groaning because their butts were sore from sitting down so long
But I meant awards wise. While of course it was nominated, SPR was the safer/easier pick out of yhe two - if that makes sense

What would be the porn title of TTRL?

I'd add Jeanette MacDonald and Norma Shearer to that list as well. The good news about Miss MacDonald is that Kino is releasing a Blu Ray of Love Me Tonight, so one of her films will finally be in HD. Even so, Criterion has/had 3 of her films with the eclipse collection.

The craziest thing is, I've only seen Saving Private Ryan once in my life, when it came out in theaters, while I've watched The Thin Red Line about 5 or 6 times since it was released. It's hard to compare 2 notable directors such as these. There is no doubt, Steven Spielberg is an amazing director, but to me he appeals to the masses. He makes Hollywood movies, and he makes them well. Terrence Malick is the opposite, he's known best to cinephiles and film buffs and his movies are anything but Hollywood movies.

Paths of Glory is one amazing film. Is it an anti-war film? Yes. I have no issues with anti-war films whatsoever. Strangely, an acquaintance of mine was reluctant to see 1917 because he said "I made it sound like an anti-war film" and that turned him off, because he wanted to see "Rambo in the trenches". I guess he loves war for the sake of war, the total opposite mindset of how I view war personally speaking. To each their own I guess.

Bottom line is, The Thin Red Line is probably my all-time favorite movie that has a war of some sort as the background character. The humanity and the hatred of war is what drives my love for that film. Is war a necessary evil to defeat evil? Ponder that question for eons, friends. No doubt, the USA didn't get involved in WWII because they were altruistic, but to save civilization as we know it. Terrence Malick's movie is deep, its challenging, and most importantly, it teaches us that dying isn't a fear any longer.
