I think you might be right. Wasn't there some speculation about that when they released the Breakfast Club, like maybe they were putting that one out instead as a compromise?

I think the company known for releasing SALO wouldn’t bow to pressure from woke people online. I hope it was more a rights issue than anything else. My dad and I bonded over John Hughes films, if you’re wondering why I’m a little defensive over this title.
Let’s hope they still put out Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as people still like that one.
Also hope that Arrow eventually releases the Jodorowsky box for Region A, but that’s neither here nor there.

Times have changed quite a lot since they released Salo. When's the last time they released a Polanski film for that matter? They had the rights to Sixteen Candles, and Lee Kline was actively shown working on it. I really don't imagine there being any sort of rights issues.

Sixteen Candles is a little bit different than Salo though. It's a mainstream film that many "woke" people will be aware of, whereas Salo is an arthouse film that is largely obscure to most people outside of cinephiles. I agree though that it would be very disappointing if that is the reason Criterion no longer has the film.

The more I think about it though, I think it's probably as some have speculated that perhaps they just did a little trade because Arrow already had the UK rights and put out a great release there and Criterion felt it would be a better use of everyone's time and resources to let Arrow release that same version here so Criterion could focus on something else.

Indiewire has an interview with Thelma Schoonmaker and she mentions working on a restoration of It’s Not Just You, Murray!. No company is mentioned, but I assume it'll be included in a set with Italianamerican and other Scorsese shorts.

Makes sense to me. I'd also respect Criterion if indeed the decision was motivated - even in part - by a desire to avoid excoriation and trial by social media.

Another possibility is that, because it had been released by Universal so many times, The Breakfast Club just didn't do as well as they hoped so they gave Sixteen Candles back. (Frankly, as much as I like Hughes' films, Sixteen Candles is a better fit for Arrow Video.)

I was honestly thinking this might have a lot to do with it. Many people may have skipped it as they already owned the Universal discs, or were not interested in that genre from Criterion.... I can also see Joe Smith on amazon going "$7.99 vs. $29.99 geez!"

DaBargainHunta Smith also has that internal dialogue with himself.

I love Criterion, but a lot of these earlier Universal, etc. releases suit me just fine.

So with the Safdie brothers being on top of the world due to Good Time and the recently released Uncut Gems, whats the likelihood of their early work getting Criterion released? Both Pleasure of Being Robbed and Daddy Longlegs are both on the Channel along with some of their short films. Is there a chance that Criterion could get the rights from IFC and released special editor similar to Monte Hellman’s double bill release?

Odd, to say the least.
I’d honestly much rather a Ferris Bueller Criterion anyways if they were to add another Hughes film to the collection

I read Dodsworth got a new restoration in a little while ago. Hopefully it gets released through Criterion, as it seems right up their alley

It's highly rumored. Janus posted a cryptic Tweet tease last year. I mean that doesn't mean anything necessarily but I would be shocked if Criterion doesn't get to it eventually now that Army of Shadows has come back into print.

I’d just like to call attention to the fact that Scottie is currently selling a massive selection of titles, including the Bergman set, on the Criterion trade thread.

What does it mean?

Has he abandoned the cause?

Will he invest the money in his newfound love of Arrow Films?

I don’t trust him to lead us anymore.

I don’t think he’s one of us.

...I move that we consider articles of moderator impeachment.

Do you have a link to the trade thread?

Maybe it's as simple as he's now a Criterion Channel subscriber, which really is an awesome, convenient, and relatively inexpensive way to see tons of fantastic movies.

In the past week alone, I've watched Black Jack and Kes because they're expiring tonight (the latter is a masterpiece) and the short film Artun (which told a very complete and effective story in only 21 minutes).
