Damn, that's so much nicer. I wish Criterion would use slimmer cases like that more often.

In for the Rohmer set, very happy to see it get an upgrade.

And wow, what a difference in the Demy set. So much nicer.

Definitely in for The Great Escape.

Hoping Criterion will include the fabled "Rick Dalton" cut as an extra...

From what I understand, Scorsese doesn't want the excluded juvenalia out there. [Possibly excepting "Melting Point", inasmuch as I wouldn't think he owns that, as it was produced by the USIA.]

An absolute perfect month. This might be the first month that I'm going to buy every single release. If anyone hasn't seen WILDLIFE, I highly recommend it. It's one of the best movies of 2018.

The Great Escape finally! They should do The Magnificent Seven next, it can look much better than that MGM disc.

I'm pretty sure they have the rights to it too.

So, is Criterion using the same scan MGM did for Escape, but their release will be better somehow? I've seen those screen shots for the upcoming Criterion and they're far superior. But I'm curious, if it's from the same scan, how is it so much better?

Most likely less filtering than the MGM (since it shoved so many dub tracks on one disc) and a different color grading.

You think Magnifecent Seven has a chance?

Oh, hold on. Blu-ray.com says "NEW 4K . . . " Criterion's site just says "4K . . . " Is our site mistaken?

Just going by the caps on their site, it looks like the color grading is pretty similar if not the same but lots more grain.

Huh? The color grading is pretty different in my opinion. Much warmer, and less green leaning.

I posted this comparison in the movie thread

Good to see another Criterion commentary get saved from the Laserdisc archive.

Two audio commentaries, one from 1991, featuring director John Sturges and composer Elmer Bernstein; the other, from 2004, featuring actors James Coburn, James Garner, and Donald Pleasence

My favorite being the one Sturges did for Bad Day at Black Rock. It's great that they are carrying it over.

My $5.99 MGM Blu-Ray copy of "The Great Escape" will serve me just fine until the reviews of the Criterion version come out. No need to go crazy with a pre-order at full price until I know just how good it is.

I'm reminded of "Rebecca" of which I have the MGM version. The Criterion release was supposedly better so I purchased it during a 50% off sale. To be honest, to my eyes, I really can't see much, if any, difference between the two and I feel like I wasted $20. Obviously, I can only speak for myself and my almost 50-year old eyes.
